Actually the high school rebuilding project was 66 2/3 state funding. It shows up as income to the city but goes right back out to pay the bonds floated for the project.

Sadly all our perfect or more sensible dreams cost money...which is being pissed away in a senseless war. These kids need a good education - to get the good jobs to afford the chronic taxes THEY will bear to pay for our current madness.

The funniest thing from yesterday was that the carefully selected trees with pink plastic ribbons around them may not...

Last night the School Committee voted to plant two trees for every one that is lost at any site.

I recognize that a sapling doesn't replace a 40-year old tree, however, it is a start. I think the committee does give a hoot.

As for the census. The fact is that the Plan for Effective Learning Communities was geared at closing Plum and building a new school in the Magnolia area. The fiscal reality gets in the way. A new elementary school would cost between 15 and 20...

Gang, No harm, no foul and I promise not to call you an idiot so long as you don't call me a moron (my spouse calls me that and much more). K-8 schools would make the school committee's heads explode if you try that one. Not a bad idea though and would keep the kids out of the O'Maley crime training ground program that it is. Don't have the figures in hand or electronically but I heard the superintendent and others mention it at a recent channel 12 viewing. Perhaps they have...

Mya - the building of new facilities is a completely different funding source than what is affected by Prop 2 1/2. Half comes from the state (drawing from the much fairer income tax system rather than the property taxx system). It's easier to get money to...

Well, well Gang, it seems I have hit quite a nerve here. I have actually watched via cable tv every school committee meeting and city council meeting for the past two years and do have knowledge of the facts. I admit I was baiting you to a point on the middle of nowhere and the modular/trailer quotes. I am fully aware of the difference and in fact modulars are far superior classrooms to any of the existing falling apart ones. This is clearly the only alternative short of building a brand new...

Back on point -- how idiotic is it to be putting modulars/trailers or whatever you want to call them on school in the middle of nowhere where they will have scrounge kids from all over the city to fill the classes. What is the school committee smoking with the idea of spending probably $1M on that school when in 5 years it will have to be shut down?? From what I hear most families in that area have already bailed out to Rockport/Essex or St. Anns.
