They do get it straight to market through the auction which is sophisticated and fast, but that product mostly goes directly out of town and through one building on the waterfront, so the rest of the harbor never sees it.

Be interested to know how long ago. Trust me, Night. It has changed. Ask any teacher, visit any school on this side of the Cape, talk to parents. Kids are leaving next year to go to private schools. Many, many families with long standing ties to the PTO and public school. Why, Night? Why would they leave if things are just fine? However, this will offer the perception that things are better at Beeman & Plum with respect to class size. So be it. Fewer kids are fewer kids in our schools,...

global - does within 1 mile count??? 3 kids in my home have been put through the Gloucester Schools and have good jobs now (not here of course). 2 have college degrees. I had nothing bad to say about their education here as well as the schools they attended (Beeman, Fuller, O'Maley & GHS)

I am worried about the same things as Capt. Joe. I think we must make every effort to maintain infrastructure and provide support so that we can further concentrate whatever is left by the regulators here in Gloucester. We can already see that as other ports shut down on the North Shore boats are coming here. We are getting some from Maine. It is hurting but it is an ideal industry for Gloucester. We have a shallow and small harbor for serious merchant ship activity but perfect for fishing...

Most people feel that it has been the mismanagement, lack of vision , and willingness to change ( nimbys) that has stiflied progress in this city for the last thirty five years. Explain how city unions are the main culprit in the cities demise.

What scares the hell out of me as far as fishing goes-

There are a handful of good fishermen in their 40s

There are even fewer in their 30s

A majority of what I would call the last big generation of fishermen are in their 50s and there isn't a big crop of guys behind them with knowledge or capital or both to go fishing. So in 10 years or so I think it's going to be really scary.

The way the buyouts have gone, fish may come back to better levels,...

Commercial fishing has to be the most over regulated industry in the world. What the bureaucrats don't destroy $4.50 per gallon fuel certainly will.
Spoke to a friend who has been a lobsterman out of Rockport for over thirty years. He is placing his house on the market and moving North. Rockport property taxes are brutal but the cost of fuel to run his boat is what's killing him. He's glad his kids decided not to go into the business. Very sad.

Friend told me yesterday that he went out for 2 days - 900 lbs. of cod caught in gillnet and had to be thrown back - says they throw back as much cod as they take in. What's wrong with this picture?

I know Dunlin was jigging for a while but they seem to have converted back to lobster traps now. I saw your boat at the fish pier recently but did not see you to wave. I am not surprised by the cod on the gummi worm. All the charter boats seem to be getting into action now.

Quick off topic, re: fish

Yesterday a group went jigging for cod and haddock and my brother pulled in a market cod on the teaser hook, which he'd baited with a gummi worm. Worm was extracted intact, but a little dinged up.

Cod were plentiful, and we also got a few beautiful haddock.

By the way, do not hold a funeral for the fishing industry just yet.
We have a federal agency determined to put fish stock recovery at the top of their agenda and indeed if there are no fishermen there are no NMFS jobs. They have a nest of environmentals nipping at heir heels to make sure of that. Their approach may verge on insanity, but I think the stocks are likely to recover, as they are doing.
Some of the rules are nutty. With fuel prices escalating radical changes in approach...
