Excellent point, Lightsleeper, about the creative accounting practices which almost always simply add your donation to the general coffers despite the designation of the donor to apply it to a specific cause and despite all sorts of promises to abide by their wishes. sakioki, in principle I can somewhat agree with you about making a hundred million dollar grants and spreading it around. But the truth is that in this day and age, for many charities, $1 million isn't really enough to fund much on an ongoing basis.

In the end, while we can all find other uses for that kind of money, it's the choice of the person giving it to do as they please.

While I tend to agree in some respects, the other side of the heavily endowed schools is the recent trend toward free tuition for students whose family income is below a certain level. If you qualify for admission, money doesn't need to be a factor in whether or not you attend. That's something of a start toward a little more leveling of the playing field, IMO. With the endowments they have, it's about time, however.

Having said that it is wonderful to note that a local family foundation is supporting an MIT partnership with the Gloucester Public Schools through the Gloucester Education Foundation. I am inclined to agree with Sakioki8 and I also have my doubts about endowing further the schools I attended when others need help much more. I was particularly shocked when a school I attended built a fantastic gym when they already had a fantastic gym. However I certainly am not about to fault Mr. Rockefeller for making the opposite choice, which might work out very well.
