Waging both wars cost the US billions in higher oil costs, so this 'blood for oil' nonsense is nonsense.

Invading Iraq and controlling it's oil supply/profits was part of Cheney's Energy Policy. Dude, it's all about the oil - for profit and control in order to be THE world power. Just go ahead and read the PNAC mission. The last 8 years is it in practice. Not to mention the unbelievable fortutitous events of 9/11 to gain the peoples...

Very little of my money is going to the Middle East to fund terrorists because I buy most of my gas from Citgo, which supports the democratically elected gummint in Venezuela. SO what if he hates George Bush?

There was a great interview with Paul Roberts, author of "End of Oil" on NPR last weekend. He makes the point that a tax break on gas prices now wouldn't really impact consumers much - although it would likely benefit corporations by increasing demand. He also pointed out the need for long-term thinking and strategy when one is running a government:

Interesting point but way to simplified. There are many factors driving up the price of oil. One of the biggest is the declining value of the dollar. OPEC will get their share regardless of the declining value of the dollar. Investors will always profit on speculation and an unstable market. Great post, Mike. What's getting scary is the number of countries ditching the dollar to trade oil in euros or a basket of other higher-valued currencies. Our pain at the pump will only get worse and force us to change our habits unless the dollar can rebound in a big way. Look at the last couple of days - the dollar gained significant ground and oil dropped several dollars a barrel.

Supply and demand doesn't apply here. The cost of oil is being driven up by the investment speculators, pure and simple. They are lining their pockets and causing misery around the world. Don't you find it funny that ANY incidental problem (or even a perceived problem) drives up the cost of a barrel by huge amounts overnight, but that the price doesn't recede when the "problem" is rectified? Refinery fires, possible attacks on a minor pipeline, heck, even a flat tire on...

I forget who said this was a stupid post or i was stupid because I commented on price gouging. Tell me how it is not ...when these companies are making record profits. Entirely different if the price of oil continued to climb because of OPEC and the oil companies were struggling but man oh man..where does it end?

There *is* something wrong with that picture, Roxie.

But there's an "oil man" in the Oval Office now, so nobody should be surprised they're getting away with this.

Nevertheless, the tax should be raised significantly. Gimmicks like eliminating it for the summer are simply ploys to buy votes from naive voters.

It's such a complex global picture anymore. Commodities traders take a big slice of the pie these days. Big institutional hedge funds make millions on one day's leverage either up or down.

Big Oil is in a class by itself. Beyond comprehension.

I don't get people who don't get doing things for the common good. I know plenty of 'em, love some of 'em despite that ... nature, nurture .... questions for the ages.

I also don't entirely get the economics of the costs of fuel from the oil field to the gas pump .... but I am just scratchin' my head about things like "Exxon Mobil made history on Friday by reporting the highest quarterly and annual profits ever for a U.S. company, boosted in large part...

Glad to see several others have finally realized that the Hummer/Prius comparison was completely bogus. Back when that story first appeared and was posted in here, several months ago, I pointed that out and felt like a lone voice crying in the wilderness. (That is a common problem here...)

At least SOME in here are capable of learning something.

Wouldnt now be a good time to repeal the gas tax? Does anyone know how much it is? More importantly, why isnt the US Engery Dept stepping in and trying to regulate the speculation of oil as a commodity? Isnt it odd, that every major news station is covering the gas price crisis and yet...not a word from the white house?? senate? house??? Where's the politcal outrage? Arent these guys and gals in office to help us?
