Nineteen Minutes is about a Senior in HS, who shoots and kills the kids who have "tormented him since kindergarten"... and the relationship he has with one of the "Popular" girls, when they were friends in their younger years, and not now

The Pact is about a girl who commits suicide, and her boyfriend's role in it.. Did they REALLy have a Suicide Pact??

Maybe I find it so disturbing because I have a teenager... or maybe the content of her...

My good friend & I read 2 Jodi Picoult Books "The Pact" and Nineteen Minutes", and we decided NOT to read anymore of hers... 2 books about teenagers and death?? That is just too disturbing for words for me

I just noticed this, Zanny. I had heard good things about her and she was on my list of "someday" reads but you think she's disturbing? Sounds like I shouldn't bother...

I think so, too. Actually, I would also read it --- at least the first one... At least up to the point where I couldn't take it anymore... I think it would be more useful to society as a whole to have an insight into the mind of such a person than to just have endless, escalating descriptions of their atrocities with no way to understand why it happens.

I would buy it, and I would read it..

Because evdery story has 3 sides, His Side, Her Side, and the Truth.

I would want to know that the Abuser may not be the horrible person he/she is portrayed to be.. Maybe I am just one of those people who tend to want to hear BOTH sides before I make any kind of Judgement..

Maybe it's the reason I love the Gregory Maguire books so much

Here's an interesting question posed on one of the blogs I just read (in reference to a discussion on Miz Lit). If the person accused of being the abuser in one of those books wrote a book telling their side of the story would you buy it?

My friends & I generally find the Oprah Books to be depressing...

we're like, Oh look, someone is miserable and had a tough time, and now look at them!!! woo-hoo

Well, as I said... I think it is normal to have an interest in reading a couple of them but then I'd expect most people would reach a saturation point on the descriptions of abuse.

A few years ago two of my sisters and I started to read the Oprah books and then discuss them. That was okay for 3 or 4 books but then both of my sisters (and I) agreed that they were too depressing. We decided to stop and went on to other books. I think the first couple books one reads might be...

No I really don't. Especially because so much of it is lies and, as the author of the article pointed out, the people who write these things concoct more and more depraved and lurid details --- even though they are entirely fictitious --- because they know that is what readers want. I personally think that is repulsive and, if I were someone who read such things, I'd be embarrassed by that.

I am kind of getting tired of it myself... I feel as if everyone is trying to make a quick buck as an author telling everyone else in the world "How Bad my Life Was, but Not anymore!"

Writers have realised that mis lit is a road to publishing success.

This is what depressed me the most about it. Misery Lit is the pornography of the last few decades. It used to be that writers who couldn't get published resorted to writing pornography in order to have an income --- now they resort to writing MisLit. And people gobble it up.

And most of the writing in those books is so bad it's mind-numbing.
