Just posted a new longlining video from Susie |
Lead | |
|
Susie Byrd went backman with a bunch of fishermen this summer and frequently would finish a full day lobstering with one crew and then go for a full afternoon
lobstering on another as soon as she stepped off the first boat. She just sent this new video of her longlining out of Tampa Florida. Good stuff.

Looks a whole lot more pleasant than when I was working for Roger Baker on the Seadog V setting and hauling 12,000 hooks a day. Muffy, didn't you do a
stint with Flaky Baky also?

I fished on the original Middle Bank, Stern dragging for its time. Went on the Linda W/Josie M tub trawling and jigging in the summers. Used to hang at
Lafounds wharf behind Budro and Scants. Best time of my life chief. Lots to tell about the days when Gloucester smelt bad but still had old schooners laying
around wharf St , and Duncan ran to the waters edge. Sweet Sue as I remember was the first to rig up as a stern dragger back then most were eastern rigged.
Elliot Mitchel was a man ahead of the times. Pre urban renewal times was the true GLOUCESTER WATER FRONT. Ah the memories.

old gloucester fishing days

You're not who I thought you were then Muffy. You're more "experienced" than I thought. Mid 70's thru mid 80's was a great time to be
pounding around on the wharves. Pogies and rebel scallopers in the 70's, fishing for herring nights with the canucks and the ruskies in the 80's,
mixed in pollacking winters with Joe Parco. After that it started to fall apart. I miss what it used to be but I wouldn't want to deal with all the BS the
guys have to deal with now.

Deputy, do you remember Jimmy Favalora? He worked the Seadog V mid 70's-mid 80's, too. |

Jimmy Fav | ||

I remember Jimmy well. He worked with Roger for a long time on and off on several of Roger's boats. He was one tough old bird who was all about tub
trawling. Idon't recall him ever getting to excited about anything but always working at a steady unfazed pace.

I was around the water front in the 70's and 80's. But Sailing not fishing. Kinda retired per say Depity chief. Sailed in smith's cove in any thing
that would sail fetching a cocktail from the Rudder on a jibe. Great fun back then. Sure we know the same folks. Stanley, Mark, larry, Skro, Wheeler,
Hank,Bonney, Melon, and on and on. The good ole days when swordfish jumped aboard an somethings fell overboard.

Jimmy Fav was a great cook, too. What ever happened to Roger, Deputy? Any idea where he ended up?

70's swordfishing | ||
|
I had forgotten about the 70's swordfish that were so plentiful they jumped aboard and iced themselves in the hold with nary a dart or tub or longline aboard. Always kept my eyes open for any "Northern Sargasso grass" floating by. Never saw any though. I didn't get into the sailing life any but many of the players you mentioned had feet in both worlds, sailing or living on sailboats while they worked the commercial waterfront. I would run across them on the commercial part. Best part was that at the end of the day we somehow all ended up at the same watering holes. Ellie, I don't know where Roger has gone off too. Things didn't end well in this area with some lawsuits and losing his boat but I heard he was running a big boat someplace but I can't recall where. I had forgotten about Jimmy's cooking. He was always in demand as a cook whenever a site opened up.

Whoa... I posted a reply in here earlier this morning.. and now it's gone...

I posted that I have an old McNeil/Lerher News Hour segment from at least 15 years ago on a VHS tape that has Jim Favalora on it -- they did a segment here in
Gloucester on the declining fisheries, and he was one of a few harbor folks that were briefly interviewed. Very briefly.
I bet there are other on that tape who people here would know. Flakey Bakey update
|
Flakey Bakey was here last summer, up from Trinidad. His is married to a woman from Trinidad and has one child. He is in Florida now as his wife couldn't
take the climate here. He was going to buy the Sea Fever, but it did not work out. Now he is fixing hospital equipment (beds?) in Florida.

It's VHS. I'm not inclined to digitize it. I suppose I could arrange a private screening.
