Are they planning on re-doing the baseball field next to the school? The configuration in this site map is not how it is set up currently? By the looks of this
map, a deep shot to left field will be hitting the assisted living facility? Who would use this new field? Perhaps, Mr. Park can put in a regulation little
league or babe ruth league field. The city certainly needs another field for official games.
Also, this site map doesn't look like the school is that close to the mall as the Mayor and School Committee kept crying about when they decided to close Fuller. |

I was told that Mr. Park, or whoever, is going to put bleaches at the baseball field. I don't know if there will be any improvements to the fields
themselves.

I believe the original plan had him repositioning the field. but if the school is closed and the city sells land......??????

Sorry, I meant the bleachers are going to be built for the Green Street Field.
As to Fuller, last I heard the plan was to move the baseball field to where the playground currently is (where the field was before the playground was built) and move the playground to Plum Cove. |

Macpac, that would make sense given the site map. The Mayor has said that she wants to sell the field to Park or another bidder but will have to get the School
Committee to declare it surplus. Unless that only applies to the School itself? Does anyone know for sure? The School Committee will do whatever the Mayor
wants on this as she seems to be charting the agenda for them.
Also, all of the back and forth chatter about what stores/tenants will be at Gloucester Crossing has had to already been decided as I am sure Mr. Park would not be going full steam ahead without signed leases in hand. Why has this not been announced to the press? The Gloucester Daily Times and Beacon had done a terrible job on investigative reporting on this. |

To answer your question: The School Department would have to declare any part of the parcel as surplus and then it would be up to the Mayor's office and the City Council. From there, if the Council decided to move forward with a sale, it would be an open bidding process and the highest bidder would get the land. Oftentimes, the wording of the bidding eliminates some potential bidders and favors another. |

Some time ago someone mentioned putting a fitness center or the Y there. That would be a great location.

Which means the Mayor (as the 7th School Committee member) has the controls since the School Committee will follow her blindly off a cliff. As bad as the prior School Committee was at least they seemed to make independent decisions. Thanks in large part to the Mayor (as School Committee member)who was the check and balance with the prior administration.

I am willing to give the current committee a chance but so far I see nothing yet to make me a fan. I will be very pleased to be proven wrong.
How about you GoO? You a fan? |

I hope that of they do sell the field, they make another one someplace for Charlie Thomas.

OldBig,
I would suggest just the opposite. The Mayor and City Council can't do anything with it until the School Committee decides to declare the property surplus, but after that, the ball is in the court of the Mayor and then the City Council to decide. There are a number of state regulations to which they must adhere when disposing of property. |

Insider -- I agree but what I was trying to say was that the Mayor pretty much has control over the thinking of the School Committee and has some allies on the
city council which will vote her way on selling the field for $$. Of course there are several regulations as to disposing of the property but it is land only
(not like the Maplewood School) which will make it easier to put out to bid. It is too bad the city is so cash strapped that they would have to sell the fields
next to the future home of a proposed municipal building (Fuller).

It is too bad the city is so cash strapped that they would have to sell the fields next to the future home of a proposed municipal building (Fuller). Any elected official should think twice before making a serious mistake like that. We need to get all of our government under one roof. With the soaring energy prices we can no longer afford all of these different locations period. The Fuller school property is the most logical place, its a no brain er.

I agree 100%. The Fuller site, including the fields should be kept and it is certainly a no brainier to consolidate the city government. It seems everyone is
in love with the idea of city hall but it is a money pit to keep open. Didn't someone float out the idea during the election season that the city sell city
hall to the Cape Ann Museum for $1.00 with an agreement that the city could use the auditorium for certain city wide events? This would keep the building as a
historical site but the maintenance would be the responsibility of the private owner. Who had that on their campaign stump speech?
