Poll -Do You Tip At The Coffee Shop? |
Lead | |
|
After reading the results of the Starbucks customer feedback survey, one recurring theme was that customers were offended that there was a tip jar for service.
Many felt that there shouldn't even be a tip jar on the counter.
How do you feel? Do You Tip At The Coffee Shop? (Result) |

I make my coffee at home. I ain't no coffee drinking yuppie wannabe! Isn't a Starbuck coffee about $4.00? Multiply that by 30 and you have my monthly
gas money.

I usually make coffee at home, but when I stop to get something, it's usually at the same Mom&Pop kind of place, and I usually get a little something
to eat too...
So, I generally throw in my change, and if it's under a buck, and I happen to have an extra one on me, I throw that in.. I know the people where I stop, and one of them is a Single Mom, doing the absolute best she can, working 2 jobs, and attending college classes... Every penny counts in her world, and she always has a smile for you, and makes me laugh... which is hard to do before I have coffee... and when I get a Bagel, she wraps it like a Swan for me, because for some reason, I get a kick out of a Bagel wrapped in foil, like a Swan |

I totally tip of I happen to buy on the road. Usually the change as well. People need to realize these people are handling your food/beverage.

I also have coffee at home in the mornings but also pick up a cup at the convenience store on the way to work. Great coffee, always fresh and only $1.35 for a
medium size. On the few occasions that I do get coffee from DD I usually toss some coins into the tip cup because I feel like I should if the cup is there.

I'm a coffee at home kinda gal, except for the weekends when I usually hit up Dunkins. I don't tip there because a medium is $1.89 and I feel crappy
throwing 11 cents into a jar....
I tried to go to Jim's, but I have to tell you I got the worst service in the world. The girl behind the counter acted like she was doing me a favor, serving me, and practically threw my cup and my money at me. Happened twice. Won't happen a third time. |

Never had the problem at Jim's.
I usually tip quite well on those rare occasions when I stop at a coffee shop. If my drink comes to $2.00, 20% is 40 cents.. and that seems too small of a tip, so I put in 50 cents... Silly, isn't it? To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

When you tip into a tip cup you should wonder how the money is split. I know of one local restaurant that collects the tip money from the cup and divides it
for Christmas bonuses! A relative of mine worked there and couldn't believe that. Needless to say, she didn't work there long. I usually give the
change to the tip cup if I'm just getting coffee on the run, but if I go to Lee's or something, even if I'm just getting coffee, the tip is better.

I always tip if I get prompt, friendly service. If the server doesn't greet or thank me or has a surly attitude, forget it.

I completely agree with you brainfix.

joltin has a good point. We really don't know who gets the cup money or how it's distributed. Now that I think of it, I'm going to ask and tip or
not based on the answer. I think tipping should be a direct message to the particular server that they're doing a good job.

imo...tipping has gotten way out of hand
I'd rather laugh with
the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun... |

Ya, it has .... not just coffee places. So many places have "to go" tip cups and baskets. I dunno .... if I'm a regular somewhere and the staff
goes out of their way to do a little extra for me, I'm likely to put something in the cup.
I'm a strict twenty percenter + in a restaurant unless the server totally sucks .... and I don't ever lay food/kitchen problems on the servers.
