I first noticed on Saturday or Friday (can't remember), with a police note that began with something like this: "A can of beer ended up costing an 18-year-old $50." And today (Monday, I mean), there was this: "An Ipswich man honked his horn at a car that had stopped in front of him Saturday afternoon. The problem was, the car in front of him had stopped so the driver could talk to the police officer. And the police officer was not happy about the honking horn behind him." Barring the sentence fragment, I think it's hilarious, but I'm a bit puzzled. It's quite a difference from the normal "Mr. So-and-so, 34, of 28 So-and-so Road, Gloucester, was arrested at 2:34 PM Saturday for so-and-so." So who's writing these police notes? Let's get them working on a novel.

One I remember went something like this: John Akers of 10 Timber Road reported a brazen theft of his child's tricycle. He followed the the thief and saw him enter 16 Timber Road and notified police. When police arrived they entered the home and apprehended a four year old without struggle. The tricycle was returned to the rightful owner. The thief was allowed to remain home and was sentenced to a parental scolding.

If you are assigned to police blotter detail, you can either complain about your assignment or make it worthwhile for your readers to come back. A good journalist can take almost any subject, including obituaries, and turn it into an interesting read..... RIP Fred Clark Frederic Arthur (Fred) Clark, who had tired of reading obituaries noting other's courageous battles with this or that disease, wanted it known that he lost his battle as a result of an automobile accident on June 18, 2006. True to Fred's personal style, his final hours were spent joking with medical personnel while he whimpered, cussed, begged for narcotics and bargained with God to look over his wife and kids... During his life he excelled at mediocrity. He loved to hear and tell jokes, especially short ones due to his limited attention span. He had a life long love affair with bacon, butter, cigars and bourbon. You always knew what Fred was thinking much to the dismay of his friend and family. His sons said of Fred, "he was often wrong, but never in doubt". When his family was asked what they remembered about Fred, they fondly recalled how Fred never peed in the shower - on purpose... No funeral or service is planned. However, a party will be held to celebrate Fred's life. It will be held in Midlothian, Va. Email fredsmemory@yahoo.com for more information. Fred's ashes will be fired from his favorite cannon at a private party on the Great Wicomico River where he had a home for 25 years. My co-worker (and best friend) was in charge of obits. One day, she received a call from a young man whose father's obituary had been sent in from the funeral home. He asked her, "Are you going to run one of those second lines?" "What do you mean, second lines?" "You know, where you say, Fred. C. Smith / Worked at Wal-Mart." "Well, we follow AP Style, and according to style, yes, we have to add that second descriptor line." The young man informs my friend that it was his father's last wish to not have his life summed up in one line - that he was a complex person and wanted his memorial to reflect that. And, while my friend was understanding, she had to insist that, if he wanted the obituary run, they HAD to follow AP Style. No exceptions for anyone, very sorry. After much back and forth, shouting and cussing, the young man screamed at my friend, "Fine! Just run the damn obit however you want!" and hung up the phone. So my best friend ran the obit. Why was every dead person a wonderful human being? Why can't an obit read: William J. Smith, 75, passed away expectedly March 4, 2008. He was a miserable bastard and leaves behind no friends and no family that will claim kinship. And why is every death 'unexpected' - we all die, therefore death is certainly expected!

Sure it's expected at some time in one's life...but obviously when they put "unexpectedly" in the obit it is to let people know that it happened suddenly I think. How many times have you seen someone you know's obit in the paper and think, gee I didn't even know he/she was sick? I guess this is the family and/or funeral home's way of letting people know that this person had not been sick and that the famiy is having a very hard time with it because they didn't "expect" this to happen....they expected their loved one to be around a lot longer? Whatever. 'LIFE IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES...YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GONNA GET'

Sometimes ones in the GDT have kind of a homey charm to them.....mentioning hobbies, interests, events from an "ordinary" life is great. The police notes are indeed hilarious! Having been used to city police blotter notes for many years (where anything that didn't involve a serious assault, a weapon, or a serious load of drugs wasn't worthy of reporting), it's such a neat slice of life to see the local ones. My personal fave has always been those from the Rockport notes in which someone (usually a "youth") was "spoken to". Ya gotta love it.

I want to say, uh, they WERE old and all... My 93 year old Grandma tells me all of the time she wonders if this will be our last conversation or not.. My other Gram died 11 years ago, and 4 days before, we were all at my Mom's house for Christmas, and she told all of us that she wasn't going to live past New Year's... When the Obit said "died unexpectedly in her own home", my cousin was having a fit.. We ALL were told! There was one guy who died maybe about a year ago, and my old friend said the Obit should have said... "He terrorized the Neighborhood Kids, and every single one of them was afraid of him, for the past 35 years. He beat the crap out of his kids, probably his wife too, and was caught frequently kicking dogs. Hopefully, he is getting what he deserves now, a large pine apple being shoved up his ass, by Hitler... I don't know.. Maybe they make them sound wonderful because of that whole "respect for the dead thing"

In the morning, the police came to their door to ask about our car (no parking violation). Apparently a neighbor didn't recognize the car and called the cops. Our friends sent us the police blotter a few days later under the title of "Bad Day for Cats", which contained 2 reports of runover cats. It also reported the "investigation" of our car. I swear, some people got nothing better to do with their time. On another note, though, I was thinking if the GDT needs a police botter and obituary writer in the future, I would LOVE the job. Of course, I might not last too long. Find a Psychiatrist

My father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer of the liver on a Thursday, and was deceased the following Monday. No one saw it coming, and though he had a fascinating life, he got one of those "cookie-cutter" obits because the family was in too much of a state of shock to write one up. He'd beaten cancer twice before. Even with that news, he thought he'd beat it again.
