Amber Alert Issued For 6-Month-OldPolice Say Child In Company Of His Parents

BOSTON -- An Amber Alert has been issued for a 6-month-old boy by Massachusetts State Police and the Arlington
Police Department. Lucas Whalen has hazel or blue eyes and very little hair. He weighs 25 to 30 pounds. Police said that Lucas is believed to be
in the company of his parents -- Michael Whalen and Danielle Boyle, both of Arlington. The infant is believed to be in danger of serious physical
injury, police said.

7pm-ish. TV says they're headed for Salisbury Beach from Arlington. The father has threatened the baby, in the past. Crisis as baby was supposed to be
turned over to Baby's aunt, mother's sister, yesterday. Aunt is making urgent pleas for them to let her take care of baby Lucas, temporarily.
7:52 pm. Good news  Amber Alert cancelled. Baby fine. Channels 4, 5.
Mother turned herself in, with baby to Arlington PD. Father still "at large."

police station. NewsCenter 5's Mary Saladna reported that Danielle Boyle, 24, came to the station with the child, Lucas Whalen, just after 7:30 p.m.

baby to the Arlington PD, after she and her husband visited the Burlington Mall, and a Burlington hotel, where their car was spotted, and they heard that an
Amber Alert had been posted, issued by police fears for the baby's safety. Father later arrested by a SWAT Team. Hope things get sorted out legally, so
they can be a family again.

In court today, it was revealed that Father threatened an assist. DA, had 72 convictions and 48 skipped court appearances. Also was convicted of drug offenses,
and assault and battery on a law enforcement officer. He was once quoted as saying,"There are 5 people on my hit list. The last bullet's for me."
No wonder the police activated an Amber Alert yesterday.

Oak...I love you but you HOPE THEY CAN BE A FAMILY AGAIN? Have you read the guys rap sheet, seen the parents on TV, watched the aunt speak? It is a total sin.
That child needs to go to the state and be LEGALLY FREE FOR ADOPTION. I am sorry, those dirtbags have forfeited their right to be parents. Period.

Global, gimme a break. I didn't see the "rap sheet," as you call it, or read the other revoltiing disgusting record, until it was posted this am,
AFTER my comments about them being a family again, had already been posted. It's so painful, a baby losing out on his birth family, because his father is a
hardened criminal, a wise guy jerk and a loser! At least the baby's aunt seems to be a responsible woman, who loves the baby. God knows what she's been
thru with him in her family. Arlington people are nice, and will find ways to be supportive of the aunt bringing up the baby, if she's appointed guardian.
Just watched the tv, showing the SWAT team in action, arresting the father. There must have been a couple dozen of heavily armed men doing that dangerous job,
with so many risks to their own safety.

Oak, you don't mention the mother who apparently isn't exactly what she should be either. I assumed that just the fact that the police issued the alert
while the child was with his parents was enough to suggest it sure isn't a safe environment for a kid.

The movie is good but it can't compare to the book. What an amazing job Lehane did with that! Twice Patrick McKenzie (the hero of the book) is put in the
position of having to make a terrible decision. The first time he makes the right choice (in my humble opinion) but the second time??? What a horrible thing to
have to decide. I'd love to know what others think about his choices....

I had dinner with a friend who is a pediatrician and he and his wife saw it........when I asked him what he'd do.........he said he would have done exactly what McKenzie did..............my response........

I thought what Patrick said at the end about not wanting a woman to come to him 20 years later and say "You knew and you did nothing" was very
poignant. Obviously the little girl was happier and better cared for with the people who had taken her and her real mother was a useless good-for-nothing...
but she was her real mother.
It would be a horrible decision to have to make.

The mother was 24 years old, the father almost my age. Clearly, she's under some kind of delusion. Perhaps she could be salvaged as a mother with classes,
therapy, and close supervision. The "father" should rot in a hole.

Lately, tracking Texas polygmists, impregnating minor age girls, and sexual abuse of boy children, held as cult prisoners, fathers imprisoning, raping their
own female children, and fathering more such children, and sad stories of children being abused while in govt. care, right here in MA., hard to know what is
the right thing to do, when we know there is so much error, in providing care for, and protecting wards of the state, or bringing criminal action to bear, on
the beasties out there. If I'm reflective of public opinion re:same, I think the public at large, especially those in our later years, are in total and
complete shock! at the failures of so many systems of human protection.
I just heard on the tv in the next room, that when the Amstetten Austrian authorites drove the discovered dungeoned children of the beast Fritzl, 73, to hospitals, to have them checked out, the kids held captive underground for up to 24 years, kept saying it was the first time they'd seen daylight! Multiply all the violations, and you have complete chaos, some labeling it genocide, of those incapable of caring for themselves. It's a lot to comprehend. And there IS progress here and there, some of it extraordiinary, but that progress doesn't seem to be up to the jobs required, to turn it around. And this is just the rubble in between the mega issues of wars, disease, starvation, slavery, poverty, in the human condition. Add to the mix, all the blah blah hokey from DC., the 2008 election, and it gets to you. :( |

It certainly gets to me, oak. I agree with you. I think one of the reasons people get so vitriolic about politics is because it makes them feel like they are
doing something useful but in an environment where they actually have very little effect. When you look at the social ills of the world they are so
overwhelming it is discouraging and it would be so different if we could put the same amount of energy and commitment into that instead of into political
jaw-flapping but it is also a far more daunting task. With politics no one really expects to make a difference so they aren't putting anything at stake
when they get all fired up. But with working to correct social ills --- if only by calling attention to issues that many would like swept under the rug --- one
is far more likely to have to look at how monumental the task ahead is. Still, there are those committed individuals who do make a difference --- like the
citizens of Arlington, Texas who worked together to initiate the AMBER Alerts!
