I love many different forms of art. I love architecture, sculptures, oil, watercolor and especially photography. One of my favorite photographers is Ansel Adams. I love National Geographic for that very reason...the photography! You sure can not beat the feeling of actually walking in and around King Ludwig's castle for example. I did not study art history but adore the Museum of Fine Arts,the Louvre, etc. This is my dilemma. I was completely disappointed when I finally got to see the "Mona Lisa" up close and personal. My expectations were obviously much too high. I realize that now. I also do like, for instance, Monet. What I cannot wrap my arms around is PICASSO! I do not get it. It looks to me like a 5 year old took a paint brush and just started slapping on paint. Anyone care to explain his work? By all means, as with other posts expound away on art.... (05/09/08 08:57 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Friend Request Blocking Visit My Community Ignore User's Posts	Of all the art forms I am most partial to sculpture, mostly because I cannot imagine how anyone can look at a block of stone and imagine where the tips of the ears and the ends of the fingers should begin. beachcomber is right --- you need to see Picasso's early work. You also have to remember what was going on in the world at the time he and his fellows came to prominence. For hundreds of years art was an elitist domain. Only the wealthy and the Royals had much access to it and could afford it. But the Impressionists changed all that. At the time they held their first exhibition the press was outraged but the people responded to what they were doing because they could relate to it. The paintings were about them and portraits of them --- not rich people in fine clothes. My favorite artist of that era is Matisse. My taste is always changing --- right now I am in love with the Orientalists. That's the beautiful thing about art, you can always find something new to fall in love with. I don't believe fame got to his head. I believe he just evolved as any true artist does after years of practicing their work. He approached painting in a new way and created Cubism a movement in the artworld at the time. I actually find his later paintings quite interesting as the almost show movement in a static piece - very cool. Cubism Defined -" In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form-instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context. Often the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles, removing a coherent sense of depth. The background and object planes interpenetrate one another to create the shallow ambiguous space, one of cubism's distinct characteristics."

Picasso simply replied, "It will, it will". And, if you are familiar with the painting it does indeed capture Ms. Stein.

Some of the things I think people miss is (a) they look at a few examples and assume that represents a body of work, (b) over time, the evolution of an artist's work might be the most revealing and worthy aspects; (c) we don't always see the works in the context of the times or the social commentary it might reflect. For example, one of my favorite photographers was Walker Evans (who I was privileged to meet and get to know a bit shortly before his death.) He was some character in many ways, but the documentary value of his work to me was every bit as much a wonderful contribution as the artistic qualities of his studies. To hear him talk about the experience of shooting many of his subjects put it all on a whole different level, too. In the end, it's all in the eye of the beholder.

I know art, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I don't understand your disappointment. I know alot of people expect it to be larger in size when they see it in person. As for Picasso, alot of people don't "get" his art, he was a master of surrealism.

I have always said I don't get the whole "Mona Lisa" thing but husband heard it's supposed to be breathtaking when you see it in person. People describe that they can feel her eyes looking at them while viewing it from many angles. I guess I need to keep it on my to-do list eventhough I may have the same reaction.

I shall have to do some work on looking up the old and comparing to the new. CK, You are exactly right! It was so small and covered in a gigantic scratched unbreakable (assumed) case about 2 feet out. You could barely get close enough to really see it because of people and the case. THAT was the disappointment. Obviously, the "Mona Lisa" in perfect condition would absolutely be breathtaking. It is perfectly flawless in it's capturing your gaze even from afar - the eyes. However, it's age and deterioration has it cracked and peeling a bit which should have been expected. I guess I just like a perfect world - it has always been presented in books differently as in "perfect" and that is why I was not as moved by it. It doesn't take away it's beauty. It is my personal expectations were too high. Life like art is sometimes presented in ways that make us believe things are different than they are. An analogy: I mentioned King Ludwig's castle. The pictures don't even do it justice. However, on the macabre side of things, I NEVER EVER REALLY understood (and couldn't possibly) Hitler's regime and the Concentration camps. I only knew about it from what I was told/read and reading The Diary of Anne Frank. Well, seeing the Concentration Camps up close and personal is the most moving, horrifying experience that every person on earth should see and never ever forget. It is not at all what I thought. I believed that I would just sail on through like any other "museum". Oh my God. There are no words that could ever explain that. I have never been to the Vietnam Memorial nor the site at 9/11 but I have been to Pearl Harbor - same feelings and not good ones. It is my personal expectations were too high. In all honesty, I never much cared for the Mona Lisa. From a historical perspective it is interesting but as an isolated work of art I don't particularly admire it. The pieces that I remember having the most visceral reactions to are the clay models of the Bernini Angels on display in the Fogg. They are the little models that Bernini made as studies for his greater works in Rome. But when I was looking at them and could detect the shape of his fingers still caught in the clay it really made me cry. I love Bernini. He and Giovanni Dupré are my favorite sculptors. Seeing their work in real life just takes my breath away. Some of them are very successful at it, and produce works that endure. Other artists have something to say. They tend to practice their craft to communicate something in their lives or in the world around them. These artists create art genres. They produce unique visions that inspire their contemporaries, and they present new definitions of what art can be. Picasso is a communicator, and innovator.

I think part of the problem lies in the plexiglass and small size, and even more of it in the ridiculous crowds surrounding the work. There are so many wonderful spaces in the Louvre, and after a quick viewing of Mona Lisa, your time can be better spent elsewhere. Gyps, I don't know if you have been, but if sculpture is your thing, the Louvre is quite a place...

I kept getting hung up on one thing or another. The Mona Lisa is small, the plexi-glass is also camera flash/sunlight resistant. I wonder how often they replace that cover. I'm lucky, I'm tall, got a good view of it even with the large crowd, I towered over most of the crowd! If you can, get to the Anne Frank annex in the Netherlands. I have not been to one of the concentration camps, but also been to Pearl Harbor, and you'll find the Anne Frank house just as sobering.

Fountain of the Triton is great, Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in the Piazza Navona (which sadly was covered in staging but still somewhat visible), and of course St. Peter's Square. There is obviously more Bernini inside St. Peter's as well. I would also recommend a look at the curled toes of St. Theresa in Ecstasy at Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome, as she is pierced by the arrow of an angel...

The last time I went to the Met I found the Gertrude Stein portrait, it hangs below eye level. The perspective really pops and it is as if Stein is the easy chair. I have to look up a picture of Gertrude Stein, as this is the image that pops into my head whenever i think of her.

The Art Institute of Boston, painting for 40+ years, I am a third generation artist in a family of artists and my daughter just graduated from The Maine College of Art. My art is varied, from simple cut paper constructions to ephemera, portraits, landscapes, abstract, manipulated polaroid (my user icon), construction, oil, acrylic, mixed media. I am known for my reverse glass painting, fine examples of which, are on permanent display at our Cape Ann Museum.
