Gregory Gibson lives in Lanesville and owns Ten Pound Island Books. His first book, Gone Boy, was about the murder of his son in a school shooting. He then wrote Demon of the Waters, about the mutiny on the whaleship Globe which I
have not read but want to. Recently he released Hubert's Freaks and, in all honesty, I can't remember when I have gotten as absorbed in a book as I did in
this one. It is a true story but it reads like an adventure novel. It is about a friend of his, a fellow antiquarian book dealer, who purchased a lot of
memorabilia from a 1960s New York Times Square freak show. In the box he discovers a collection of photographs by the great American photographer Diane Arbus.
The book is just plain wonderful.
Those who attended my talk at the library last week may remember Greg. He was the charming bearded man who attended and talked a bit about his book. I highly recommended this book to anyone who is interested in photography, antiquarian books, strange bits of American oddities, or who just wants a good read. It's great!
