Bass Rocks Clubhouse Renovations |

Amazing how much bigger and nicer the new clubhouse will be. I wonder how much the annual dues will increase? Maybe the money they bring in from Weddings will
offset the cost of the building.
Sure looks purty.

doesn't matter. few locals will ever get to see inside unless they pony up thousands to the elite club that was built on the backs of local tradespeople
and now are pushing them out. all the while they laugh every time they get their tax bill from the generous city.
.....and don't believe that "watered by well" sign either. they hooked up to the city main a few years ago.

What do you mean, "built on the backs of local tradespeople and now are pushing them out"?? Isn't it a private club? And don't they pay
taxes?

built on the backs of local tradespeople and now are pushing them out.that's the best one I've heard in a while. Last time I was in there, as a guest, I noticed that the membership was largely comprised of local tradespeople. Yup, plumbers, electricians and such, alongside sub shop owners (ahem), liquor store owners, fish processors, etc etc. Not exactly the business elite one might want you to believe. |

The course has been watered by well water since the irrigation system was installed/upgraded in the mid-1990s.
The club asked permission to hook up to the city water system for the rare times when the wells and ponds are insufficient. The city granted them permission. If and when the club ever determines that it needs to use the city water, it will of course pay the going rates. But to my knowledge, that has never happened. |

It's not exactly elite. Lots of local yokels are members. Todays entry fee is around 10 grand, but thats a bargain compared to the 10s of thousands other courses like georgetown cc and turner hill charge. Private golf ain't cheap. |

They are turning a local golf club into a country club and have been trying to for years....hence pushing out the local players for the seasonal visitors who
'summer' in Gloucester. Once agian we cater to visitors instead of the locals.

I'm not a member of Bass Rocks (I belong to another Golf Club), but I play there often, and I am familiar with the membership. There is still a fairly large fraction of local folk there., and I contend that there were more seasonal player 30 years ago then there are today. I don't believe for a minute that there is a plan to push out local membership, but that may be an unintened result of upgrading the club over the years. Once again, private golf aint cheap. Pony up or play at Candlewood. |

I find this thread hilarious. There are few things stupider than laying out thousands for a golf membership. Right, UJ?

I was a caddy at Myopia for one great season. My guy came in 2nd in the big tournament and I got a $100 tip, in those days. I was so stoked.

Myopia. Now you are talking elite. No picking up a membership application at the pro shop there. You need to be invited to join, and if a blood test
doesn't reveal blue blood, then fuggetaboutit.

I agree with Flagstick's analysis that private golf isn't cheap. I worked one fall season a few years ago at Salem Country Club. It's on and off
Golf and Golf Digest as one of the nations top 100 courses. For reference, the membership there paid about $50 dollars per day just to have about 80 sand traps
raked and groomed each day. I know because I did it. As I recollect, the initiation fee there was about $60,000. Then each year an annual membership ran about
10 grand and you had to spend at least $600 per month on food and drink from the clubhouse. Every once in a while Dwight Evans and Carleton Fisk would show up
and play a round. Most or, at least some, of the really old private clubs are comparably economical compared to the newer private courses. But I'd say FS
is right in that they are selective as to who will be considered for membership. I would say a lot of the newer memberships and courses are geared for noveau
riche philistines who are one step up from Candlewood caliber in playing ability, and one step down from John Daly in social graces. Lots of business is
conducted on the links, and I suppose joining a private club could be helpful in that regard...ie entertaining clients etc... but that whole atmosphere is
unappealing to me.

Are the local folk middle income Americans or are they top tax tear back shore residents?
I'm going to lean towards the former.... |

Ever go full moon golfing?
Like tonight and tomorrow night. Snow and ice all melted. All the runoff happened today. Tomorrow night should be good.

Wow I never knew there was that much animosity toward The Golf Club.
Yikes. It's kinda shocking. |

I didn't either. I always thought they were a good neighbor. I know that many organizations use the course for fund raising outings which I view as a good thing for the community. Anyone know what is behind the animosity? |
