How does your garden grow? |
Lead | |
|
The snow has finally melted enough for me to see my gardens again! Time to put away the plow and get out the rakes and hoes. I am so happy. Tomorrow I will
start spring cleanup. Anyone else in their gardens yet?

I've been eager to get out there for about a month now (I know, I know), but because my back injury isn't quite healed yet, I've had to cool my
jets!
However, it hasn't keep me from going out there and poking around, seeing what's coming. I'm hoping I can get out there soon. |

Waaay too cold by the water. That NE wind goes right thru you. Been frozen all day, and had to do some distance walking outside today. BRRRRRRrrrrrrrrr
Then an herb garden arrived, with a grow light. You lay the seeds on the prepared soil bed, already fertilized, add water, keep inside, until things warm up a bit. Will see how it goes under a skylight. Pretty soon the plants are ready to harvest for all your salads, soups, stews, or just to enjoy seeing, and getting fragrant whiffs. The age old crucuses are up, on the eastern side, of the house across the st. They were ordered by a former owner, waaaay back in 1923. She left the original invoice, about $20, from a hardware store. Some of you probably remember "Artie" (Artemesia) who used to do the books at the Rudder, for as long as Evie ran it. Salute' again, Artie! Always think of you at crocus time, 100's of them re-appearing every year. She was the sister of Sgt Mehlman, a police officer, known in their day as "the best waterfront man in the city," don't know the backround of that moniker As youngsters, after graduating from the grade school, 1-3, where the Gruppe' Gallery is now, between Rocky Neck Ave, and Wonson St.; and then up top 94 Mt. Pleasant Ave.,"the Point School," the two used to row across the Harbor to go to school. Word was that they had "perfect attendance" always showing up on time, for school; maybe the Forbes School for a bit, Central Grammar, later the High School, even in the worst storms.
Those were the days, before Rocky Neck Ave. was a roadway, and was just a dump, or "tip." It was made into a roadway in 1923, acc. to fill permits from the Army Corps of Engineers, or whatever its predecessor was named. Children had to wait for the tides to be low enough to get over to E. Main St., sloshing across the mud flats, in boots with those funny old buckles.

I put the trash out a little while ago and there are hundreds of little Johnny-Jump-Ups along the fence. They are so cute and sooooooooooooooo welcome.

I got the rest of the stuff to plant my Asparagus Seeds today...
We still have a few feet of snow in the yard, but the driveway is just about clear now, and I am starting to see my rock wall... I am SO pumped for planting this year... I can not wait.. I got a few more Peony Bulbs, and for my birthday, one of my friends gave me a $50 Gift certificate to my favorite nursery up here, so I am thinking I am going to get myself a few Iris, and maybe a Lilac. 2 of my favorite things |
