Nice, Joe. I was out there this afternoon but didn't have my camera. It seems as though the wisteria is especially beautiful this year.

My last summer in the Deep Souf, the Wisteria put on a stunning display... it was truly magical.
To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

While I was searching for the swan photos I came across this one. Since I know oakarina loves this bush I am posting it for her:

Thanks again, Gypsy, for the photo of the Tree Peony. Will look for it at its E. Main St. location. Seems way too early for it there, but it must get enough
full sunlight to bring it forth. Lost all my peonies, several years ago, and the newly planted won't bloom for a couple more years. Am used to peonies in
later June, in all their glory.

Hey, Joe! Who planted that cute little spruce tree on the top of the mountain? Looks like it loves it up way there, and I'll look for lights on it at
Christmas.

oakarina, the peonies aren't blooming yet. That photo is from last year. I looked this morning and I suspect it won't be long now.

I'd rather laugh with

Sorry to disrupt this thread. Oak, Katherine Harris made her wise decision in 2000, not 2004. I realize you'll never understand application of laws, or
even the reasons we have them, but we can all remain clear on dates.

You're right and wrong, UJ. Right about the dates, wrong about my understanding and application of the laws. As for Katherine, need I remind YOU of all
posters, that "The sinners have more fun."

It's so nice to see Wisteria...
I tried growing one here, because I always wanted one, but I guess I live too far north |

I love wisteria. When I lived in Houston the condo complex I lived in had covered walkways from one building to the next and in the spring they were so thick
with wisteria that the sunlight made violet colored reflections on your clothes. It is such a gorgeous plant.
Three of my favorite flowers in one shot --- wisteria, lilacs and tree peony...

Problem with Wisteria is it is REALLY invasive!!!! Once it takes root, it grows like a weed!
Its flowering life is so short.......I wish the flowers were around a bit longer! |

This time of year, I re-read the sorrowful epic poem by Walt Whitman, then living as a pauper, in NYC.
"When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed." 1865-6. It tells of the funeral procession carrying Abraham Lincoln's body, back to Springfield Illinois from Wash. D.C. by train. Lincoln was assassinated on April 16,1865, at the Ford Theater, only a few days, before the Confederacy collapsed, bringing the Civil War to an end, after 6 long bloody years, of Lincoln's efforts to bring unity. Whitman, clearly a man with overt symtoms of depression, had been watching a star, an "orb" in the sky, "declining".... at the time of lilacs blooming, but he couldn't decifer its message. Line 193; "Passing I leave thee, lilac, with heart shaped leaves. I leave thee there in the dooryard, blooming, returning with spring. Line 205; "Lilac and star and bird entwined with the chant of my soul." Our whole country, and most of the world joined in deep sorrow, at Lincoln's death, in the time of lilacs blooming, its scent wafting over hill and dale, city and prairie, ocean, lake and riverfront. In high school, we had a whole huge hedge of it bordering the driveway. It was meaningful to me, that our public hs English teacher was the one who introduced me to Whitman.s poem, intertwining our History and English classes, leaving a life long impression on me. It was published in Whitman's "Leaves of Grass," an epic collection describing some of our country's growth and expansion, westward. |
