Careful Out There - Ticks Are Brutal This Year |
Lead | |
|
My friends wife just got out of UMASS Medical /Worcester with viral meningitis which the docs think came from a tick bite. She was on a drip antiviral for 5
days and now has a 10 day oral regimen to go through. If it went undiagnosed it could have been fatal. Channel 5 just ran a special report on tick and Lyme
disease with new cases up 25% annually. I took about 30 ticks off my pup just this past Sunday & now I got the creepy crawlies. Just one of the fine
pleasantries of living in New England.
When in doubt, twirl.

I was bitten by a deer tick two weeks ago. Woke up with a localized pain on my belly and sure enough, it was a deer tick holding on for dear life. I removed
it, but the swelling, redness and itching lasted for days. The jury is still out on whether or not I have the dreaded Lyme Disease. Thanks to my neighbor's
dog, who always greets me when I come home from work.

i use Frontline Plus on my dawg which works great and stops ticks from attaching themselves to her..but, it doesn't stop them from hitching a ride into the
house. i've already found 2 this year...walking across my couch
all you golfers best beware....i know Bass Rocks was loaded with ticks last year..i can only imagine how it must be this year...i suspect there's gonna be a lot of sick golfers

I find they react quite vigorously to a pair of pliers and a blowtorch... something like in Pulp Fiction, but on a smaller scale.
Wear eye protection if you try this. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

The et just told my sister that there is something at the COmmon Crow that you can buy and spray on the dog when you go for a walk and the ticks wont attach.
We use Frontline and also have found a bunch of ticks crawling around.
I wonder if you can spray your yard for them? Anyone know? |

If you live up in the Lanesville area, ticks are a real problem. I believe Ross Burton was bitten and he was chopping wood in his own yard and was not
necessarily in the woods. A few good squirts of bug spray with deet on the pant cuffs and sleeves, around the neck, etc., should keep the buggers off. I get
tested once a year whether I feel good or not. You DO NOT want to get lyme disease. If you think you may have it, get it looked at ASAP.

Sadly, many of us who have lived here for years probably have undiagnosed Lyme (which can present as all sorts of things, including fibromyalgia). Back in the
70's, Lyme was finally recognized (though it had been around for at least 100 years) but not much was done (and, still today, not much is done - there used
to me Lyme specialists in MA but not anymore). The tests you get in your doctor's office only test for recent infection of Lyme - if you were infected
years ago, it will not show up on current tests.
As a kid in the 70's, I remember our dog was infested with ticks (we pulled at least 6 off every night) as our house was in a wooded area. Our house became infected with ticks crawling over the walls (I remember waking up daily and counting ticks) - so we got rid of the dog and had the house fumigated - far too late I'm sure as the odds that all these crawling ticks did not bite us is miniscule. Not to mention the hours and hours spent playing in the woods - which included tick removal. |

Actually, I think there is one doctor on the Cape who specializes in Lyme disease. I can ask a coworker his name if folks are interested. My coworker's
brother had Lyme disease that went undiagnosed for years, until he met this doctor as a last resort. Turns out, the doc knew how to treat it. Lyme disease is
not something you get, have it treated once, and then it goes away. Once you have it, you have it for life and it can manifest itself in many different ways.
The bottom line is, if you live near the woods or frequent the woods a lot - take the necessary precautions. Wear light colored clothing, keep the grass cut
short, check your pets and kids when they come in, use repellants as necessary, etc. Corliss Bros used to sell tick tubes and other repellants that you can put
in your yard. A specific type of mouse carries the disease. Deer pick up the ticks and carry them into other areas, such as residential and lightly wooded
areas where people frequent.

Ticks are no joke and neither is Lyme disease. Cape Ann and surroundings is a hot zone for Lyme according to the CDC. All cases must be reported. I
wonder how many go undiagnosed?
Also, Poisin Ivy is thriving due to higher carbon dioxide levels in the air but that's a different thread.... http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/05/060530-warming.html |

So...can you hae your yard sprayed as a first line of defense?
|
|||
Sparkamarker |

Yes, there is a spray that some commercial applicators do use; I bet you can Google it up. My bro in CT gets his yard sprayed and it is quite effective. His
dog has a tumor, but otherwise AOK

Ya mean a tumor from the spray? My dad is convinced that some spray they used caused liver damage in both dogs...
On another animal note. Do not use a Swiffer (sp?) Wet Jet if you have cats. They walk on the floor and then lick their paws. Supposedly toxic. If you saw my kitchen floor right now, you would know that our cats are in no danger. |

Is that why some of us are crazier than others? You mean it wasn't the acid, pot, mescaline, mushrooms and growing up in Hamilton?
What a relief that would be. Just take antibiotics forever. |

Oh christ...that Swiffer 'scare' again.
Absolute bollocks. (a.k.a. not true.) This was old two years ago. (bet our floor is less clean than yours, Glob.) |

I'm curious why you take that position.

elliegal |

Yep, you're right, Gang o' one. Hey Global, ask your sister what the name of that spray is, willya?
|
|||
Frosty |
|||
What a relief that would be. Just take antibiotics forever. Antibiotics are another issue. First, overuse causes all sorts of problems with immunity. Second, some, like Cipro (the quinolone class), cause liver damage, renal failure, musculo-skeletal disorders, and death - as well as typical side effects such as seizures, convulsions, bleeding, kidney failure, and other lovely effects. And, if you have cats, what do you use to clean your floor? I have two around 6 months old - each has not yet learned to bury her poop, so they track poopy litter all through the house. If they lick their paws, they are ingesting poopy litter. And, if we pet them, we run the risk of the same! |
