A few years ago I remember the monarch butterflies making an appearance on Eastern Point. Does anyone have any information about this. Thanks.

The monarchs failed to reach their Caribbean, Mexican and other southern destinations, a decade or so back, killed in frosts along the way, interrupting their
travelogues. Many swarms died and the following years, only a few got back here, in the spring. But the returning numbers have started to increase again, a few
here and there.
Did you know Ivy LeMon, who together with Sarah Fraser Robbins helped keep reserves for them on Eastern Point, enouraging people to plant the plants they liked? You can learn more about them via Ma. Audubon's website, as the Audubon owns the parking lot at the Lighthouse, and other spots the monarchs loved here. Also by googling them. I saw a couple out there last weekend, but nothing like the swarms we used to see, in the 60's, 70's. It's still pretty cold, in the 40',50's for them to be already back. |

the southern migration in late summer/early fall is a better show, when the milkweed is ripe.

Correct - and late summer is when Joe Pye is in its glory.
