no dogs on Singing Beach |

What do we think about the talk of banning dogs year around on Singing Beach? What if this sets a precedent for other beaches, such as ours?

I am absolutely thrilled that Singing Beach might ban dog year round and hope that other local beaches and reservoirs may follow suit. I know there are some
responsible dog owners and most of them coincidently read CAO. But if you don't think it is a problem go hang out on a sunny Saturday in summer by the
entrance to the reservoir and compare the number dog walkers who come out with a bag to the number who come out empty handed. Gloucester must have some of the
most constipated dogs in the world ! Maybe it is the water.
'Course you have you allow for the ingenious fellow who bags it then ties it head high onto tree limbs overhanging the paths..... |

The entrance to the reservoir smells like a giant litter box. Also, is it legal for rover to go in the res for a swim?

I hear there is a new local ordinance requiring Doggie Depends on any canine using any beach or watershed property. Who stocks those around here?

It's about time. Even with a leash law people still insist on letting thier dogs run free at Good Harbor. You'd think after the multiple stories of
"nice" dogs suddenly ripping some unsuspecting childs face off that these folks would smarten up. I love the line " Oh don't worry he/she is
a nice dog" as it jumps the kids. I'ts an animal knukkle head you never know what's going to set it off!

It's just another ordinance that no one wants to enforce. Start fining people and see how quick things change.

I'm all for it and I have three dogs at home. I'm tired of side stepping wherever I walk due to the laziness and cheapness of at least 75% of the
public. It is amazing that at the entrance to Ravenswood, you have free bags supplied and still there are piles going up the beginning of the path. I am also
paying a dog behaviorist to work with my male dog (on leash) who has been repeatedly jumped on and charged at Goose and Ravenswood while the owners stand off
to the side and do Nothing. Just my two cents worth....

It comes down to the dog shit on the beach, even though it's winter, you still gotta pick it up, not many people do.I would truly love to the GPD enforce the dog shit ordinance. The blvd is peppered with shit as well as our beaches and public parks. Enough is enough. Gloucester is NOT a toilet bowl. |

I would like to see some sort of Ordinance too... I have my 2 dogs.. When I lived in Magnolia, and we went to either the Boulevard, or Ravenswood with the dog,
we would make sure she pooped in the woods, behind our house, on our property, BEFORE we went!!
I really hate it when people don't pick up after their dogs.. It's just nasty, I know, but if you don't like cleaning up after them, THEN DON'T GET A DOG, IF YOU CAN'T TAKE PROPER CARE OF IT!!! |

That's right Zanny.
I only scanned the article but one suggestion was having someone, a volunteer, monitor the beach. People shouldn't be allowed to walk onto the beach without bag in hand and this person would walk the beach babysitting the losers who don't pick up after their dog. Something needs to be done to about the offenders, unfortunately the police can't be chasing down shitting dogs, although it could be a lucrative source of income should the fines it be enforced. |

alot of people don't realize it will be everyones' loss in the long run. non-dog owners should be able to enjoy public places without having to worry
about unleashed dogs. as for those that don't carry bags, and allow their pets free rein, they will lose their favorite walking areas. it is a fine to
leave shit behind (good slogan...), but on the priority list, it probably doesn't rate too high.

flip, It IS illegal to leave dog poops in local watersheds, by local ordinance. Just plain common sense, altho now most drinking water in Gloucester is treated
at either of 2 water treatment plants, the one at Babson Reservoir, and the other at West Gloucester, Rte 133. The dog poop laws are probably the last on the
list of priorities, to get enforced. There is no warden or like funded to do that enforcement, never has been. That doesn't mean that dog poop slobs should
just continue to refuse to pick up their pet's effluent. They could demonstrate some responsibility and intelligence, DUH, and just do it wherever they
walk their dogs. PICK IT UP! Just plain common sense, and good for many sectors, including tourism, business, environment.

My question was, is it legal to let your dog swim in the reservoir

Kudos to those many, many dog owners who consistently DO act as pooper picker uppers for their canine friends...and even go so far as to do same for those who
don't. Remember them???

if the Gloucester leash law applies to the reservoir, which I think it does, then I would think that dog baths would not be legal.

Flip... I'm going to guess it not legal to let your dog swim there..
As for having the dogs on the beach... Although I do own 2 of the beasts, I don't bring mine down to the beach any more.. Once, I was at the beach, with my kids, no dogs, and someone else there, a tourist, brought their dog with them.. They let that dog poop all over the place, didn't clean up after it, and it barked at little kids all afternoon.. It had never occurred to me, until that very afternoon, that not all people enjoy dogs and their company.. Some people are truly scared of them.. Those people also have every right to enjoy the beach as well... Even more so than a dog does. It also was absolutely disgusting how they left dog poop on the grass, near a swing set, where children were playing, until the life guards told them to either clean it up, or leave... It was elevated to the point where the police had to be called in to make them do it, believe it or not!! Some people just don't realize not everyone loves dogs, and you just can't bring them to certain places... |

Even cops have to pick up dog poop...
