Bobby D, you're making too much sense.

Now, Bobby ... that is just too much common sense for one little city to digest. Perhaps you should apply for Joe's job?
I can tell you that the DPW workers who actually DO the patching would LOVE to have that kind of thinking implemented. If they're "bullshit" excuses, they're being made by management, not by the workers. As to why they travel to Watertown, Y, all I can tell you is that it is apparently the nearest facility. The driver takes the "hot box" truck up there (yes, there is a working hot box) before dawn, often has to wait anywhere from one to three hours in line to get the patch, and then has to fight the morning traffic to get back here and start the actual patching. Obviously, it's an inefficient, time-consuming, money-wasting approach, but isn't that what this city has been so good at for so many years? In all departments, not just the DPW, the workers who actually perform the tasks know very well what would make everything run more efficiently, more cost-effectively, and produce better results. The trouble is, they're asked, but then nobody listens to what they have to say because "management" is so much smarter than everyone else. |

Y DEVELOP wrote: YDEV, if I am not mistaken (and maybe I am) the city has to go out to bid on some products and this may be one of them? The City's Purchasing Dept has to go by the Mass General Laws in regards to costs over a certain dollar amount. Something like "40B" comes to mind...but not sure. Lots of places tack on a "fuel charge" for deliveries now, so it may be cheaper in the long run to go pick it up. Just thinking. |

I think it has more to do with the asphalt industry and the time of year. Many of the asphalt plants close for the season because they are more expensive to
operate during the winter and there isn't much demand for the product between December and mid-April. Watertown is probably the only one operating in the
area.

Bobby,
That's a good suggestion, though it wouldn't be that simple. Wards are based on population. Therefore Ward 2 is about 1/4 the size of Ward 5 with fewer roads. But the idea is right. Take the political designation of Ward's out and divide the total road mileage by 5 and then go to work each day. I would like to address the comment about Ward 1 being the step child. The Mayor, the Ward Councilor and an At large Councilor live in Ward 1. The Council President grew up in Ward 1. A third of the Council and the Mayor call Ward 1 home. Two years ago, the seven member school committee had 6 members from Ward 1 including the former Mayor. This year, there are ONLY three members of the seven member committee from Ward 1 which is nearly half. The superintendent and assistant superintendent both live in Ward 1. I'm not suggesting favoritism to the Ward, but to call it the step child is a bit inaccurate. |

My understanding is that Watertown is also the one they frequent during the summer months, so I'm not entirely convinced it has to do with weather.
I was talking to someone today who said there is one in Wilmington, and some other city a distance out from here. Regardless, none of it makes sense. |

Anbody else wondering why JG has not typed a single comment on a thread regarding his own ward???? It's understandable, he might not have the time, what
with trying to run the GPD and the GFD that's got to keep you pretty busy, not to mention his constant mission to funnel every red cent the city has into
his beloved school system.....

Bid BS | ||

DRIVING TO WATERTOWN IS RIDICULOUS. I UNDERSTAND THE BID PROCESS. HOWEVER, IF PICKING THE CRAP UP IS PART OF THE DEAL IT SOUNDS LIKE NO DEAL.
THIS IS ANOTHER PERFECT EXAMPLE OF AN IDIOT AT THE WHEEL AND A BUNCH OF MORONS IN THE BACK SCREAMING "WHERE WE GOING?" I FOUND A PRODUCT ONLINE WHICH IS USED IN ALASKA AND CAN BE USED ON WET SURFACES. IT CAN BE STORED FOR UP TO SIX MONTHS. MAYBE SOMEONE CAN LOOK INTO THIS. |

I was also told by someone who worked for the city for some 30 years (and is in a position to know) that regardless of whether or not the patch is of good
quality, the cities/towns are forced to accept whatever is being offered.
To me, that is over the top. I guess it's kind of like making a cake. Some days it comes out right, sometimes it doesn't, but people end up "eating" it anyway. |

what kills me is how can they NOT see where some of the potholes are. the one on the main roads must see dozens of DPW trucks pass by every day but STILL
don't get fixed. I do put most of the blame on the top though. no accountability.

Obviously my suggestion is an oversimplification. It also wouldn't make sense to repair only part of a street, stopping because the truck just crossed a
ward line. However, the methodology, any methodology, would be a step in the right direction.

lake st, if you live in E Glou why not give your ward councilor a call about the potholes? If you don't live in E Glou and just have an axe to grind with
Jason Grow, you can also do that personally instead of posting it here. I'm sure Mr. Grow has learned by now that it doesn't make any sense to respond
here on this board when someone is goading you on. Waste of time and effort for him to try to explain anything here IMO

I've spoken to mw ward councilor, JG and it does no good. I will show him the same support that he has shown me when it comes time for his reelection.
Again he is not weighing in here on this thread but has plenty of time to comment on the threads that attack our cities municipal employess, fuck him.

For the past six years ward 1 has been running the city. No wonder this city is so screwed up.
