I mostly just pluck my magic twanger now and then...
To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

Hey, guys, do we have to go down this road on every thread? Pretty please can we just leave a few threads where people can just discuss an actual
topic? (I'm begging here....uh.....but not on my knees!)

I have no idea what you mean, Ev. I was making an onlique reference to that ol' kid's Tee Vee show, Andy's
Gang...

Ev requests that we take the magic twanger talk to an appropriate thread - Elliot Spitzer thread is recommended.

You know... I actually knew what LWN was talking about!
Musically... I am trying to decide whether or not to participate in the annual "Diva Show" here in town... and what I would do... I had a thought of doing "The Bitch is Back" or Crocodile Rock by Elton John... |

Do it, Zanny! And post a video! Love it.
What kinds of music programs do local schools have, BTW? I mean in terms of the actual content. And do local musicians play a volunteer role in the schools? I know the chamber folks are doing a program in Rockport I think this week. I'm a firm believer in exposing kids at a very young age to many types of music besides the usually insipid stuff that is often published "for kids". Just because they're young doesn't mean they can't appreciate more sophisticated harmonies and rhythms. My grandkids (under age 9) have always loved a wide variety of music and almost daily put something on and create dances or skits to go along with it. Love to see that creativity. I find it interesting the choices they make. At the moment they're intrigued with latin sounds (influenced by Spanish class at school) and get excited about Cesaria Evora and the Estefan "90 Millas" CD. They also love big band stuff. Recently we tried some relaxation and Reiki sounds at bedtime (sold by me as "magical fairy music"!) and it worked like a charm to calm them down. That reminds me......I'm blocking on the name at the moment.....but is that 60s rock group with 60s musicians that often entertained around here for kids still out there? They were really fun. The grandkids had a ball one day when they played out at Russell Farm. |

Ev, I know that the Cape Ann Symphony Orchestra performs at Fuller for local elementary schools. They give a talk, do a sort of 'show and tell'
demonstration of instruments and they play selected pieces from their Family Concert Series. They actually have a bunch of thank-you notes from local kids
posted on their website. BTW, it is pretty great that Cape Ann has its own symphony orchestra.
Ev, where are your grandkids learning spanish at such a young age, that's great! |

Not locally, Sigurdr. Out of state in a public magnet school. It's amazing. The 5 yo perfectly rolls her "r"s which is so hard for older kids or
adults to learn. It's taught within a whole cultural context, too.....learning about traditional foods, music, dance, dress, etc., I believe in 3X weekly
classes.

That is pretty awesome. Kids should be learning another language at a very young age as it becomes much more difficult as we get older. Glad to see
that some places are able to fund such a program. Understandably Gloucester can't make this a priority in our schools, but with sufficient funding, it
would be a great thing to have. Plus it would be fun to ruffle the feathers of the "this is America, we speak American" crowd...

Is there something wrong with speaking english in America?

Is there something wrong with speaking english in America?Absolutely not. But kids who learn other languages are less xenophobic. They also learn to capitalize. |

I'm learning a bit about audio recording, keerjo. I play folksy guitar and some of my own stuff, which has been very distantly compared to a vague Gordon
Lightfoot sort of a thing. I invested in a two track Lexicon Lambda input device and a multitrack Mixcraft program. I'm starting from scratch on recording,
but making some progress. I'm thinking I might like to record a demo CD sometime before I croak, and see if there might be a real musician out there who
would like to buy a composition. I used to do a few open mics around the North Shore area, but it's been a long time. A couple of years ago, I did an
original at the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mount Airy, North Carolina. They were mostly into bluegrass, but were patient enough to invite me to do a couple
more. Nice buncha folks!

No one is saying there is anything wrong with speaking English in America, that is obviously the language the vast majority speaks. What I am saying is that
it would be beneficial to children if they could learn another language at an early age, whether it is Spanish, German, French, Chinese, etc. There would
obviously need to be better funding for something like this to happen, so I don't think we will see it anytime soon. It is the people who can't be
bothered to push "1" for English because this is America for cripes sake, who have the problem.

Sounds Great...would love to hear some of your stuff sometime... A great way to Home Record these days is to use the MAC program Called Garage Band. Out of all the recording programs I have used...Garage Band is by Far the easiest to use, and produces quality recordings. You can do as many tracks as you like without having to bounce tracks. I Have some raw stuff up on myspace. http://www.myspace.com/frankiegsongs This was actually my music page, and then when my little pal JJ got sick last year...I dedicated it to him. I have some songs up there that got us through that tough time...... There are two songs on there that JJ use to sing with me by the fire in the yard...jj's Song and Take it all Away... The third song is by a christian artist named Jeremy Camp...I rerecorded it...Called Walk By Faith.... I just finished a brand new song called.....I'm an Angel.... Would love to hear some of your stuff someday...and if I can be of any help....Just ask.

Since we're into music here, AA, one of the great things about other languages is that some of the best vocals are done in romance languages, particularly
