While some allege that the mayor's proposed change in the legal department is "much needed", no one, the mayor included, has spelled out any legitimate need for the change or how the new system would better serve the city (access, costs, etc.). Some have pointed to the Lambaris case as evidence of the legal department's screw ups, but that ignores the fact that the entire Lambaris affair was created by three inept chiefs, each one making the situation worse than the one before. If you want to talk about much needed change, how about starting there? Unfortunately the mayor, taking her cue from the unions, stands silent on that proposed "much needed change." Beyond that, I'm hard pressed to accept the whining protests from the likes of SCA or Y Think regarding the quality of our legal service as trustworthy assessments. I don't believe anyone, save the councilor with whom the mayor sees "eye to eye" and a few of his buddies, is against positive change for the city. The time is long past to begin moving our city forward, but that doesn't mean that any change is good or that a half-baked plan should be accepted simply because it's "new". From this outsider's perspective the mayor failed to do any homework on the legal department issue beyond deciding that she wanted to make the change; she did no homework before replacing the chairman of the licensing board with the very culprit responsible for the behavior she criticized and used as an excuse for the replacement; and her behavior and statements concerning the potential lawsuit from Essex over the sewer -- ignoring the ordinance and hiring outside counsel unilaterally then billing the $6000 charge to the rate payers while citing potential conflict of interest as an excuse -- is indicative of her lack of thoughtful consideration and her extreme hubris. Blaming the council for the mayor's failures and missteps makes no sense, whether you support the changes or not. She's not deserving of a free ride on the proper procedures simply because she's new and is proposing change. Once she recognizes that, we'll all be better off and the city will hopefully begin moving forward.
