Crude oil is pumped from the ground a couple of thousand miles away. It is then pumped to a shoreside tanker, ferried across a few thousand miles of ocean, pumped ashore to a refinery where it is refined and blended at extra cost by government fiat, into many different products, gasoline is one. The gas is then trucked thousands of miles to the gas station nearest you and, despite the high cost of extraction, transport, refinement and storage where the supply chain makes very little profit per gallon, the gas you buy costs less than all the mostly unnecessary stuff you consume without batting an eye. Think a gallon of gas is expensive? This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective to other things we buy.
