Half comes from the state (drawing from the much fairer income tax system rather than the property taxx system). It's easier to get money to build a new building than it is to keep your textbooks up to date. Ghastly! If I was ruder, I'd say 'get a life, for chrissakes'. Maybe move up here and do some procreating of your own....much more fun, and it gets you off the couch (..or not..). I'd would love to see the research and figures showing the census figures/birth rates...would you post it here for me to follow up on? If we in North Gloucester indeed have barren years ahead of us, then an idea circulating that we might go all the way up to 8th grade at Plum Cove could be a reasonable one. There is a ton of research and well-considered opinion that the system of 6-8 grade middle schools is not the best one for academic and social development. But what do we know?..we allow the little ones to wear slippers in class during the winter months! At least we know who all the local crack addicts will be around 2015....and they won't be wearing 'sensible shoes'. (My post-Graduate Degree in Education (4.0 GPA) trumps your Minor, by the way; but glad to have you along...as long as you don't call me an idiot again. Only my wife is allowed to do that.) K-8 schools would make the school committee's heads explode if you try that one. Not a bad idea though and would keep the kids out of the O'Maley crime training ground program that it is. Don't have the figures in hand or electronically but I heard the superintendent and others mention it at a recent channel 12 viewing. Perhaps they have the info electronically? I would hope they are considering this stuff but from what I have seen recently it doesn't look like they are thinking too much beyond next Sept. What is the status of the construction at Plum and Beeman and Vets, if you know? Have they broke ground? I hope they are not cutting those big trees during school hours. I know from the GDT that the contracts have been awarded and it is scheduled to be complete by Aug 15th. What is your take on that happening on time? I recognize that a sapling doesn't replace a 40-year old tree, however, it is a start. I think the committee does give a hoot. As for the census. The fact is that the Plan for Effective Learning Communities was geared at closing Plum and building a new school in the Magnolia area. The fiscal reality gets in the way. A new elementary school would cost between 15 and 20 million dollars and take a few years to complete. The modular (not trailers) plan in place adds space to all of our elementary schools by this fall. Not the best plan but the best we have and it is one we can work with. Greg

Instead of wielding broken bottles at dawn, we're filling each others' glasses at dusk. Cool, OldBig. Sadly all our perfect or more sensible dreams cost money...which is being pissed away in a senseless war. These kids need a good education - to get the good jobs to afford the chronic taxes THEY will bear to pay for our current madness. The funniest thing from yesterday was that the carefully selected trees with pink plastic ribbons around them may not be the original choices. The kids in the playground took them all off and were using them as streamers to play with. Finally, an adult realized what was going in and the ribbons were put back on the trees. The right ones, I hope....

It shows up as income to the city but goes right back out to pay the bonds floated for the project. Damon
