Dun. My wife took those pictures
. They were taken just after they were
told Ames was going under so she took a whole bunch of pics. She worked there for years and though it was not the easiest place to work, she had a lot of fun
and enjoyed her co-workers. It was one of the most successful stores in the chain. Did about 8 million a year in sales which is great for any department
store. That little Ames was enough for the entire Cape and did its best. I'm still wondering how 30 stores can survive.

Looks like a wrong-headed move to me.
The whole project has been fraught with trouble from the start. |

As someone who has seen not one, but three, downtown Main Streets destroyed by Big Box development, this information scares me. I know I'm new to town and
don't know all the ins and outs of the issue, but I have to say I'm cpmcermed.
The sad economic reality that these stores bring is short term gain long term loss. Even worse scenario is if the town can't support these stores and they *do* fail - most big box corps won't give up or sell leased land. So the lot stays asphalted and empty until the lease is up, dissuading any potential competition from coming in and developing. Net net is ugly, gaping, abandoned lots and no local jobs at all to show for them.... |

I'm glad I don't have to wake up with a big head tomorrow. That is your problem!

And by that you mean?

Sorry if I care deeply about this issue. But I grew up outside of a town where, when I was in grade school, you could stroll up and down Main St., shopping for
school clothes, gifts, groceries, hammers and nails, you name it. Everyone knew everyone by name and there wasn't any fear of letting an 13 year old wander
while her parents checked out. By the time I moved back after college, Main St. was - literally - a heroin den. Driving up or down it, you kept the windows up
and the doors locked for fear of carjacking. I had to cross Main St. on my bicycle on my way to the gym and I rode faster over that two block stretch than any
other part of my route. I heard catcalls and epiteths and sexual threats. What happened in those 8 or so years? Walmart. Home Depot. Lowes. Applebees. Target.
Chiles. Barnes and Noble. All just down the road....
And, in case you're curious, the town I'm talking about is Allentown, PA. Yeah, exactly like the Billy Joel song... |

How about a Models or Sports Authority? I love it when Pallazollas has their once a year 50% off sneaker sale after they get marked up 75%.

capt Joe will there be any department stores that you know of?

I agree, tyu12 .... I have no interest in seeing a Marshall's, TJ Maxx or Khols type of store. We need an all-purpose department store. Yeah - ala
"Ameses"... you know, housewares and small appliances, electronics, books, cds and dvds, toys, a little bit of sporting goods, hardware, automotive,
camping .... a place where you can grab a pair of Levis off the shelf, and oh yeah ... underwear. Staples is cool ... I sooo freakin' miss the Office
Center. And Bookends ....

All I know that have signed leases is Staples and Marshalls, there was talk of a crafts type store that was close to having a finalized deal and a couple of restaurant spots. From the information as I understand it, it is 60% leased or close to finalizing leases. Other stores will be announced soon. There was mention of a possible Panera Bread and the 99 type restaurant that would be complimentary to the hotel. The hotel that is planned will have architectural details that will have it conform to more New England type of building with gables, and not a big box. No Trader Joes, no Demoulas on that site. Kiosks promoting the specialty shops of downtown will be on the property, along with CATA bus service to the downtown and senior center. From the meeting Sam Park is a smart smart guy, and did not at all come off as slick. They are starting work on an ad campaign I believe for this year even though Gloucester Crossing isn't slated to be open til fall of 09 promoting Gloucester for people to come and spend money locally to help downtown merchants. |

Downtown is already full of gaping holes, and to equate Allentown with this place is such a stretch...blaming big-box stores for the demise of that place is stupid. It's like blaming increased condom use for increase worldwide AIDS-related illnesses...just because both happen at the same time does NOT mean there is a causational relationship.Strolling and shopping is a lost art - not least because of parking and home-to-shopping distance issues, and because we are ALL working our asses off and don't have the time. |
