I'm working on the itinerary right now; thinking of a climb under a full moon :)

I thought you might be all over it, Les. Can you imagine the picture possibilities?
I'd say you'd be likely to find Roxie up there, too (but they'd have to be serving more than tea!)

Well, I'd be happy to see Roxie there, but if they're serving more than tea I don't know if I am up for backpacking a person on the downhill
descent :)

lol ... I just watched the video, too. I was right there .... up the stairs, the path with the outside chain .... lookin' a little sketchy after that. I
think I'd make it up, but I wonder if there's another way down ...
Be very careful when passing someone going in the opposite direction... okaaayyy ..... ha ... the last line on the page .... "I'd go almost anywhere for a pint - but a cup of tea?" |

I'm reminded of my trip many years ago to Chichen Itza where I backed down the 365 steep steps one step at a time clinging to the low lying chain with one
hand and the stone step in front of me with the other. There are "claw" marks I'm sure where my fingernails dug in. Oy........

Damon - do you know about the Inferno Race at Tuckerman's ?

My mother's first cousin used to do Tuckerman's with a group of employees who worked together, at the original John Hancock, back in the '30's.
Not sure how they got from Boston up there to the area?, Maybe the early ski trains were already running to N. Conway, and then buses, Model A's, pungs,
(Horse drawn sleighs on iron runners,) over to Tuckermans. There's early 8 mm film around in museums, libraries up there, of the beginnings of the ski
industry. Have seen it shown on New Hampshire's PBS.org. which shows great N. H. historical atuff especially on Sunday ams.

Some of the runs on Tuckerman's aren't that hard. My Boy Scout troop regularly made trips there in the Spring. There was a run for kids of all ability
levels.
My memory is there were about 7 named runs, only two of which were expert level. The numbers may have changed since then. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

What an incredible scene! I might have done that in my bullet-proof twenties, but not now. I learned my lesson climbing the Flatirons in
Boulder during a full moon with three other rock climbing newbies led by two expert climbers. To say I was scared shitless is an understatement.

That confirms it, Brain----you're certifiable!

The Sherburne trail from Howard Johnson's (The Tuckerman Ravine Shelter) down to the AMC Pinkham Notch camp is not difficult. However everything above
including the little headwall, Hillman's Highway, the head wall and the various alternates such as Brookie's run and the left gully are challenging.
The snowfields at the top are not scary, but then at the end of the day when the corn snow starts to freeze up solid, you are above the headwall :)
Yes, familiar with Inferno but I have never seen it run. It was before my time that it really happened. The races held there these days are really slahoms and no one tries to shuss he headwall any more ! I was volunteer ski patrol there for a while, speaking of packing people down. Damon |

In the Sixties, a rumor ran rampart in skiing circles that Jean Claude Killy was going to race in the Inferno. The snowy trails to the race site where mobbed
with his fans. He never showed, but it was a great race anyway.

The suspicious conspiracy theory again, eh?
Relax. It isn't real. Don't walk in front of me, I don't follow. Don't walk behind
me, I don't lead.
