"Harvard opened my eyes and mind to the rest of the world. It was because of Harvard's language requirements that I spent the summer of 1933 in Germany and saw first hand the ominous rise of fascism. And it was at Harvard, that I first studied art history. Harvard provided me with an intelligent framework to understand what I was seeing, and experiencing, that has stayed with me my entire life.
The gift was first reported by the NYTimes. Rockefeller was a member of the class of 1936, and is former chairman of the Chase Manhattan Bank.
"I have enjoyed working with President Faust, in structuring the gift, and I support her vision for Harvard's future." Rockefeller said.
"It's a magnificent gift of generosity, from an extraordinary friend of Harvard University." President Faust said. Faust is the Lincoln Professor of History, and has had occassion to thank David Rockefeller many times before.
Approx. $70 Million will enable students to learn about other cultures in quality international experiences, internships, service work, research and travel. Rockefeller has designated $30 Million to provide hands-on learning opportunities in the arts and to renovate Fogg Art Museum and Reisinger and Sackler Museums, and more than 260,000 objects in collections.
