What scares the hell out of me as far as fishing goes-

There are a handful of good fishermen in their 40s

There are even fewer in their 30s

A majority of what I would call the last big generation of fishermen are in their 50s and there isn't a big crop of guys behind them with knowledge or capital or both to go fishing. So in 10 years or so I think it's going to be really scary.

The way the buyouts have gone, fish may come back to better levels, but there are very few permits out there. The fishermen that have remained can make a living on the higher prices being paid for fish. They don't need to land nearly as much to make a days pay because there are so few fishermen left with permits, that there isn't a ton of fish being landed on any given day so the prices are higher.

They have made it sustainable by reducing the number of permits, but it will be sustainable at much lower number of boats being able to fish and support the waterfront's infrastructure.

In 10 years time I see a "club" of the remaining fishermen that still have boats and permits making a decent living, but it not being nearly enough product to sustain the entire waterfront or even close to what is now being used for the fishing industry.

The regulators were hell bent on reducing the fishing effort and they have done so. The guys that didn't sell their permits have seen their fish go from an average of say a $1 a lb to close to $3 a pound. They are simply making it on less fish that has tripled in value from ten years ago (and a whole lot less effort I might add).

The problem is that our wharves depend on volumes of product to go over them to make a living but the regulators have made it so large volumes of fish need not go over the wharves to make a living as a fisherman.
