From the GDT....
Where did the school department come up with $52,000 to "pay the city"? Does that mean that their budget had an extra $52,000 that it wasn't using? Doesn't the City (us) fund the school department, which would make this more of a rebate back to the city which means that they're not really "paying for the rights" at all? Also, I thought I read a month or so back that all the equipment in the concession stands belonged to Marshall and Silva. Paying for things such as stoves, freezers, dishwashers, etc. is a little more expensive than what mostthink of as "paying for kitchen tools". Does Rich can a bump up in salary to run these concession stands? Is that figured into the equation or does the school department's line item for "school food service director" just get a little larger? Does anyone know what the revenue for the concession stands were last year? Just wondering the numbers really balance out. Also kind of ironic. Same day that the Lowe departure is formally announced (cause the Mayor thinks running with an outside contractor is a good thing), the concession decision is announced (cause the Mayor thinks running those in-house is a good thing.) |

any additional profits, taking 60 percent of the marginal revenue and giving the city 40 percent.
I bet the split will be more like 95% schools 5% city |

The people that ran the concession before had the city by the balls. Let's not forget the bathroom issue last year. The city incurs some heavy costs in
keeping those buildings operating. As far as numbers go about profits let's be real it is a cash business and we all know what that means. Bring in the
school dept and keep it clean and I bet the city comes out ahead. The bidder will not be able to bid this year.

I assumed that meant the city would take 100% of the first $52000 in profits.
To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

I registered on this site a couple of weeks ago, but decided not to even discuss this. Todays story pushed me over the edge. So they take my (our) tax money
and squeeze the school committee budget until they can squeeze no more. Then they tell us the school and city are running a severe deficit. Finally, Mayor
Kirk and S.C. Chairman Verga have found the golden goose. They take $52,000 that the schools don't have and give it to the city, so they can give it back
next month when the 2009 school budget is funded. ARE THEY PLAYING MONOPOLY? or what. In addition to the union pay for the cooks/managers, as well as the
large stipend Rich Kelleher will receive for running the concessions, we will increase by $??? the pay scale that their and Rich Kelleher's pensions will
be based on. This way, although it may not be a huge number, it can be carried by us for as long as they live. THANKS! There are so many reasons that these
units should have gone to bid that it is ridiculous. Cash Businesses should not be the business of the city. The free market of the bidding process gave the
city a fair income (without the headaches). I might not have won the bid, but can tell you that it would have been a lot higher than $52,000.

I don't know how many of you read or care about the editorial I put in the GDT, but I did receive a response from the mayor two weeks later. Very classy.
Mr. Marshall, I am comfortable with the business plan put forward by the School Dept. Have a nice day. Mayor Kirk |

That is insane. Who is going to staff these stands? High school kids? For how much? How reliable? And correct me if I am wrong, Wingbeachman....don't they
all pay in cash? How will the City reconcile expenses versus cash taken. Sounds like more than the school can handle.

I read your letter to the editor, "beachman," and I agreed with it.
Is that the exact content of the letter from Mayor Kirk? If so, it would seem a bit "up your nose" for my tastes. I'm very much in Kirk's corner, but I don't want to see that kind of exchange from her. She should have written a letter to the paper herself, explaining the reasoning behind the decision, etc., and expressing regret that anyone is unhappy with the decision. Keep it professional, not personal ... and "have a nice day" would seem a bit juvenile to me. |

No question they can do it. Probably the brown paper bag method. About 30 to 40 part-time kids, coming and going over the summer. Did anyone factor in the
increased cost and time for the payroll department, or the increase workman's comp, self insured or not it still is a cost. If a cook should be injured
during (separate) summer job do you think they will collect based on just their beach salary or perhaps their entire income from the city.
The product given or purchased at a discount from the federal government cannot be used for resale, so someone better be sure that there is no co-mingling of product, and split time will never be kept for food service time spent for beach work vs school lunch, or senior meal on wheels, etc. I AM SO PISSED |

Wingbeachman you are another businessman looking for something for nothing. Why did withhold your bid last year until you got the ok the city would
clean the bathrooms? It's business deal with it. That is the risk of being an entrepreneur. Move on and learn. You had a good thing while it lasted - bow
out gracefully.

I'll bet dealing with the restrooms 7 days a week is going to cost more than they anticipated. Will a union custodian be required to staff GHB and
Wingaersheek? At straight time or OT?

Yes that was the exact text. I had also tried to get an answer from the councilors, the DPW director, and the purchasing agent all to no avail. I realize the
city owes me nothing, but a little consideration would have been nice. Three letters, then the editorial, and then two more weeks. Send in your taxes now!

You don't know what your talking about Y. The city didn't take care of the bathrooms, and I didn't withhold my bid. I took care of the bathrooms,
and look forward to seeing the cooks scrub the toilets, and then come back into the concession and cook your burger.

So wingbeachman you are saying you don't know how to train personnel on proper hygiene? I heard Gus Foote and gang discuss the issue ad nauseum. For the
record you fine business tycoon, I never bought food at either crappy stand. They should both be condemned by my standards. Face it, your gravy train of free
lunch is over - deal with it.

The school department ran the beach concessions BEFORE service went out to bid with Marshall and Silva winning bidding battle. Ah - don't you think there
were reasons WHY the city decided to replace the school department with an outside contractor? Here we go again...
Marshall and Silva ran the concession well - courteous window folk, as fast as possible service, and bathrooms were in better shape than previously. Don't walk in front of me, I don't follow. Don't walk behind
me, I don't lead.
