Funny you should mention woodpeckers, Jim. Very evident the last few days. Made me think about the shock their brains take. Any lessons there for professional
boxers?

Jim and Brain, The reason to post here for me is to get more info while investigating a story. All I said was I was asked to do a story on the issue. The same
person asked me at the same time to get the fire scene on Middle Street cleaned up, so we contacted CH 4 and they began contacting people about it. As a result
the scene was being cleaned up four days later.
Clearly there is a confrontational situation going on in Manchester between a man and woman over the ducks. That I am certain of. |

OK, fine. Then don't post inflammatory things that inspire fear.

Ok, fine just tell everyone else that also.

No, I do not want to inspire fear with any of my posts. Do you get that?

Flame away here all ya want. When I wrote "running with it" I meant on TV not here. There should be different standards on the tube.
Relax. Have a cup of tea.

Save Cape Ann, never doubt yourself. Poisoning animals needs reporting as much as if it were humans being poisoned. Kudos to you.

Is poisoning animals dependant on location bro?

Sure, if proven.

Coyotes maybe? but ducks??? Did I miss something?

There are other predators here beside coyotes. If human, they need to be profiled and caught.

The question really should be, are ducks being poisoned here. So far we have one second hand report that they are.
I have no complaint with SCA investigating the matter. He is doing good work in doing so. I acknowledge that I may be erring on the side of caution here for two reasons. One, I recently watched Bill Moyers' Journal, Buying the War which spoke at length as to how the Bush administration manipulated the press and television by providing both ends of "two sources" to get its message out. There, at least, used to be a rule to insure journalistic integrity that stories be verified by at least two sources independent of each other before you run the story. I take the poisoning of ducks, animals, people, SCA's tea seriously and thus believe we must seriously weigh whether we have enough confirmed information to make the accusation on television. Such an accusation, true or not, could have negative consequences for the person accused. Two, no one from the birding community has reported an increase of dead waterfowl in Manchester. The area is heavily birded at this time of year because of the influx of breeding herons and egrets so it is unlikely that a mass poisoning of ducks would go unnoticed. I have to give that at least equal weight to the second hand report that ducks are being poisoned and conclude there is insufficient evidence to make these charges at this time. It is as likely not true as it is true given what we have so far. I know that in this space folks are given to vent and make broad emotional claims untempered by the legacy of journalistic integrity that reports in other media have inherited and, yes, I fully recognize that that the journalists of today have often failed to collect that inheritance. Still there is this idealistic part of me that wishes we could act with more reserve. I would much prefer the internet become a medium where folks could have confidence in the information presented. Lacking that, I will resist the notion that print and television should adopt the internet's lack of standards.

Accusations are just that Jim. But some are true. My friend had some ducks that daily walked to the pond at the park. Muscoveys I believe, anyway the kids
loved them because they whistled. Someone else hated them and hand feed poison laced corn till all 6 were killed. It took a wild mallard to be found sick at
the park to draw attention . The person was never caught , but it was well known in the hood who did it and why. So it can happen, in the case I speak of it
was a personal vendetta against the owner of the muscoveys.

Pigeons are no more a threat than your next door neighbor, the Song Birds, Squirrels, Coyotes (they were mentioned) Insects, Wolves, Bears, Vegetables,
Meats, Nuts. Everything & everyone you are around, eat, handle etc... has its drawbacks. Every living animal, bug & insect has a zoonotic disease that
a human (could, but more than likely not) can be infected with. Including Bacterial Infections, Skin disorders, Neurological disorders etc.... Life it self has
many other angles. So,.. now that we know people can be killed in motor Vehicles, Planes & Trains do we stop using them for transportation or would it be
better we educate everyone on how to operate the vehicles in a safe manner and what not to do. Educate people on proper food handling and proper animal
husbandry and how to live with and around wild animals.

I have been reading the entire string and am appalled by the guy who shoots the ducks to get rid of them. What a dope! Doesn't he realize that shooting
them doesn't do anything but kill them? It doesn't solve the roosting/nesting problem. The ducks keep returning. It's a vicious circle: He shoots,
they leave for a time and then they come back. If he wants to rid the pond area of the birds, there are humane ways to go about it. I read about a company
called Bird-X (www.bird-x.com) that has machines that emit sounds of real ducks and geese that help scare away the ducks
and they never come back. They also have these wicked cool, but scary looking visual scare owls whose eyes seem to move wherever you go - and it scares the
birds away. I thought, "hey, I'll get something for a friend of mine to scare birds away from his lake house" and oh man did it work. Maybe your
guy should do this.
