I play in almost anything 99, only time I wont play is if the course is closed, or they sound the horn to come in, otherwise I will continue to play, good rain
gear is the key! I did watch the Masters, it was ok, the few years prior were much more exciting to watch, but it was fun to watch. Any of the Major
tournaments are well worth watching IMO. Keep plugging and hang in there, the ball will travel better with warmer weather, and the greens will become more
tolerable, they are very soft now with all the rain we have had.

If it is supposed to be 65 on Friday, I'll be willing to play a few holes, 99. Perhaps a little session on the driving range at S & A and then either
the loop or perhaps Lakeview if it's really warm. Up to you. I've been involved in cutting and splitting our old Linden Tree, and my body feels like
it's been through a wringer. But I should be recovered by then. Lets see how the weather plays out....Personally I've played enough in my life in
inclement weather to pass if it's not warm enough to loosen my muscles. I agree with ParPutt and yourself that putting seems to be a real problem for us
baby boomers. I never practiced much on that, even in my prime, but now just bending over and sending a dozen balls across the living room rug sends me to the
couch.

86 told me about what you're doing with the tree UJ.....pretty ambitious project but you'll have a cozy winter when it seasons.
I'll leave Friday up to you. I'm game for either place. This afternoon the utes and I played the loop and you would have wept with pride when I used the 3 wood to tee off on the 3rd hole .....at the white markers mind you (didn't bring the driver.....I'm weaning for when I cheat on it and buy a monster) and where did the ball land? In the water you say? Wroooon...g (pronouncing the g)! It landed not 4 feet from the green flag. Then you would have regained your composure as I missed the f*#!!*#g putt and any hope for a birdie, but I was pleased enough. |

When it actually means something, those four footers can be awfully nerve-wracking....as well as the three footers, two footers and 18 inchers. Down from
there, it's almost impossible to miss, but I guess I probably have. The shakiest four footer I can recall was back in 1998 when I was on my quest to par
all the public course holes in Essex County. It was on the 6th hole at Colonial up in Lynnfield. December 7th to be exact. The hole is a rather long par 5. I
got the ball over the pond and short of the marsh, then pushed the second it to my typical landing area behind some willow trees. I flew a seven wood behind
the green and then hit a rather miraculous 50 yard pitch shot that just made it up the crest of the slightly elevated green and stopped four feet above the
hole. I'd had enough experience playing then to know that all I had to do was hit it on line....the slope would easily carry the ball to the cup. So for
once it was one of those putts where the question was how to hit it softly enough. I just tapped it and as the ball tracked to the hole I held my breath...it
was center cut but accelerating fast. The ball flew over the hole, but gravity had just enough time to bring it into contact with the back edge of the cup. It
popped up about a half inch, then dropped IN, IN, IN. I'll never forget that one.

Lakeview was in pretty good shape the other day except for hole 5, the short one by the highway which was far too squishy. Damn near ruined my new shoes.
#2 had a birdie on that hole. Made his "hole" day! I stunk altogether.
UJ, give me a shout if you want to go tomorrow. |

I am playing at RGC this afternoon and anticipating much better course conditions, hopefully it will help my score, probably not, but hopefully.

Let us know how you did, pp. Tomorrow will be my first swings of the year. I'm gonna try a tip from one of the magazines, suggesting you focus about 6
inches in front of the ball to ensure hitting it on the downswing with the irons. Hopefully, I'll be able to carry over the driver and fairway woods swing
from last year. I never worry about the score though until about July.

I played absolutely horrible last night, really struggled with my irons, divot was going further than my ball on some shots. My putting was also off, I could
not judge distance at all, and left many putts about 8ft short, which is very unlike me, oh well. We all have those frustrating days and yesterday was one of
them. I am looking for a much better result on Sat, Sun & Monday, going to be great golf weather all weekend, I have Monday off also, make it 3 days of
golf in a row. YIPPEEEE!

I picked up a copy of North Shore Golf at S & A the day we went, 99. I was really distressed to see that Colonial in Lynnfield has closed for good. It
was one of the courses I had hoped to take you to. You can see one of the holes from 128...but not for long. It was sort of a unique course, set amongst the
wetlands and cat-o-nine tails that made for a different kind of golfing experience. I'm sorry to see it go.

Sorry to hear that UJ. I've been thinking about the courses I've played so far I think Rowley is my favorite with Cape Ann coming in second. I
admit that I weigh the "pretty" factor more heavily than the difficulty factor for now, as they are all difficult for me. Rowley is so lush and
beautiful and Cape Ann has those stunning views. Even if I get to the point where I can par more than one or two holes a game, I'll still give high marks
for pretty.

I am glad to report my game has made a big turnaround, early in the year I could not get a rhythm going and was scoring around 90 consistently which is not
where I want to be, I took a lesson from a local golf legend and I was told my back-swing was far to quick, I have really slowed by back-swing down to a crawl
and my tempo is great now, I am making solid contact with all my clubs and getting great distance.

Was thinking of giving you a call yesterday, 99. But somehow I just can't get enthused until about June. Guess I've just been playing for too many
years. Had many chores to do anyhow. At least I replaced the cellar bulkhead door. I think its better if you call the shots as to when you want to go...I'm
free most every day...and can usually go on a days notice. I do like that Rowley lunch....but there are many other pleasant courses. I have to say that one of
golfs most enjoyable experiences is playing Ould Newbury...just beyond Governer Dummers on route 1. That is probably the second hardest 9 holer in these
parts...but the enjoyment there is not on the course, but rather sitting on the porch of the clubhouse having a couple of brewskis after a round. I'm not
sure how good the wine cellar or kitchen is though.

Just saw this post now UJ. I've been practicing and today and yesterday were quite pleasant if a bit squishy after all of that rain. As soon as I see a
nice warm day in the forcast I'll call you.
Proud to say I shot a 85 using these new techniques last time out, it's unreal when you really focus on your game with the help of someone who can see your weak points and make some adjustments. I had 6 pars in a row at one point, was very happy to say the least.Congrats Par! On UJ's advice I've been trying to use the irons more than I have. Just practicing the past couple of days and last week with #2 I'm finding that I'm liking them more and more, but I still haven't gotten to the point where there is a heck of a difference in distance between a 9 iron and a 5. |

After observing your game for some time, 99, I recognized a few fundamental weaknesses. The reason I suggest practicing and using your irons, is that they are the only clubs allowing enough loft to hit a green and hold it. Obviously, the higher a ball is flighted, and the more steeply it comes down..the less run it will have when it lands. That's what you want when you are going for the green. My ideal 99 would hit a driver about 175 (no problem), then be able to hit a long fairway wood off the grass about 150, also no problem. She would be near every green on holes measuring up to 375 yards. But on shorter holes she'd be able to hit a 4 iron (or hybrid) , 6 iron, and 8 iron about 125, 105, and 85 yards respectively. They would have good trajectory and hold when they hit the putting green. She'd hit a pitching wedge 65 and a sand wedge 50. Using my advice, she would hit every shot out of greenside bunkers and confidently assume she'd be near the hole or at least on the putting green. She would know which of the irons to select for chip shots to assure a one putt. And she would learn how hard to hit the various putts, possibly by virtue of possession of a long putter....which are much easier on the back, and consequently encourage practice. Instead of wasting money on a full set she would be happy to carry six less clubs throughout the years, and not be huffing and puffing like me after a walking round. She would use the money saved on the six unneeded clubs to get custom fitted for the ones she does need. |

Geez!! Piling on the homework, eh? I think with one of those soccerball heads I could reach 175.....I think I did it in Arizona. I still get lousy
distance with the fairway woods...I'm guessing 80ish yards with the #3 at my very best. I have trouble getting any loft from the fairway with the
woods and tend to hit a lot of those worm burners. Even if I do get some air it just doesn't go that far. I have been liking the irons in fact I borrowed
your old #3 iron from 86 and tried that. I like it because it's longer and I can hit the ball fairly straight with it....but nothing like 100
yards.....more like 60. I like the pw except I always kind of scoop it so the ball goes too much to the left.

I remember last year you parred the fourth hole at Rowley, and that took 3 good shots to reach the green. So it's nice to know that you CAN hit for
distance, even if it is the exception rather than the rule. Geez, I've even got an old 1 iron up in the attic. I'll bring it over and you can try that,
if the 3 iron seems to work. A few years ago, one manufacturer made clubs all the same length but the idea never caught on with tradition bound golfers. You do
seem to hit the longer shafted clubs better, which is a anomaly..most find the shorter more lofted irons easier. But, I agree, it sure is easier on the old bod
when you can play most shots standing as upright as possible.
