Good example. Time for the rest of us to coordinate with each other to share rides and shopping trips.

Ghetto Shaw's, ghetto mall ... the terms make my skin crawl. Just one of those life's little idiosyncrasies .. maybe cuz I think people who use the
term have no idea what a ghetto really is ...

I do my weekly shopping at the Gucci shaws and I try to get up to MB about 1x month. I would shop weekly at MB but you absolutely cannot go there on the
weekend. The danvers store is so crowded you cant get the cart through the aisle and I end up forgetting a bunch of stuff. The savings at MB is significgant. I
think the prices at S&S are out of sight and not sure how they stay in business. I used to shop at the old S&S and the prices were much more inline
with shaws.

Mag, heads up to a pm I just sent you.
For emergency paper towels or something quick for dinner Shaws is most convenient. Whole Foods is opening soon on Route 1S where the Wild Harvest used to be. If I budgeted time well enough I'd get food stuffs there and paper and cleaning goods at BJ's. |

I wish you guys had a Hannaford near you.. Hannaford BLOWS away both S&S and Shaw's...
When it comes to produce, Hannaford has a WAY better selection, the meats are much better too. and the prices are lower too. and you don't need that little card to get the sale pricing... I noticed in Florida, that there is a Publix, or a Winn-Dixie ever 5 minutes... NOW there is a grocery store I wish was around here.... Publix... |

Great info on the EVOO I was getting at that when I posted to squig. However, I always heard that Greek EVOO was superior to Spain's. AS well as
experiencing the difference - much more fruit in the Greek olive oil. Please provide your source.

The Southern grocery chains are far, far better than anything we have up here, Zanny, that's for sure. And I almost put into the original posting that the
discount card is a negative... So Hannaford's doesn't require them? Hmmm.... I may have to head north for some shopping!
Publix is most excellent. Their in-house bakery products are actually good! Bagels are decent, though not as good as Jim's or any other "real" bagel, but they're far better than any other in-store bakery bagels... And their turnovers are to die for... My diet consists of, in large part, fresh fruits and vegetables, and I don't have any problem finding good quality at Market Basket. In fact, it's
my position that their turnover is so quick because of the volume of business that they do that nothing sits there for very long, and the same with meats and
seafood (though I don't buy a lot of meat).

Ah, but is it real "fruit," CK, or is it merely "fruit-flavored?"

This is cracking me up. When I lived in Texas we had an on-going debate in my office over which was worse, Winn-Dixie or Piggly-Wiggly. And there were a few
Yankee transplants who kept bemoaning the fact that they hadn't been in a decent grocery store since they crossed the Mason-Dixon line...

At least that's more honest than some of the chubbys' claims. Costco, if we're still voting. |

Having lived in the north and the Deep South, as well as the far West, I can attest to the quality of the grocery stores in the south.
Furthermore, a recent Consumer Reports evaluation of major grocery chains found the same thing. None of our Northeastern grocery chains were even close to the top rankings, which were dominated by southern and western chains. I don't think anyone is asking for proof, I think it's just a matter of the grass being greener.
Living so close to the Rio Grande Valley, the produce available in Houston was always excellent. However I found the baked goods in the South to be awful --- excessively sweet and doughy. But everyone's taste is their own....

So much of food shopping is very subjective, isn't it? What's perfect fruit to one person isn't at all what may be the preference of another. Same
with many items. Selection of brands and less common items is another issue. Organic vs non-organic, political issues attached to some companies, standards of
dating foods, etc., etc., all play into our choices.
One of the interesting things I heard discussed recently was how much of the bargain priced spices are up to 10 years old, but you'll never likely know it. Won't hurt you, but you're not getting quality or accurate flavors. There's also apparently a big industry in repackaging which allows for some funky dealings. For example, be aware that "packaged for _______" can mean many things......not all of them what you may want to believe. It's a jungle out there.

I'm with ckcaney on food choices - except for the red meat!
I'd also love a Publix here!! I'll shop wherever I am. In general, if I need paper goods it's worth a trip to SAM's Club. Spouse works practically next door to MB so spouse does bulk of weekly shopping. I usually hit Gucci Shaw's at night as I know where everything is (my goal is to get it over with as quickly as possible). The one thing that never affects my choice is political issues attached to the stores. |
