The city is in terrible shape and wasteful spending must stop. Every dime counts. One idea I have is to cut back on city issued "take home" vehicles. Other than the Police Chief , Fire Chief and the Mayor, I don't think anyone else should be allowed to take a city owned vehicle home everyday. Why should tax payers be paying for an employee's insurance, wear and tear, maintenance on city vehicles driven back from home to work. Does the employee have to pay for their own gas for the city vehicles or are tax payers paying for this. I would imagine this would save thousands a year. I don't know how many "take home" vehicles are allowed in this city but this needs to be looked at. Does anyone have any real numbers regarding this. Which departments have "take home" vehicles and how many are there in this city?

If this city has 70 take home vehicles there is something seriously wrong! Cut out 60 of them that is not contractually allowed the city would save 4k for gas another 1k for insurance, maintenance I have no dollar amount, 5k each car at 60 cars would save $300,000.00 a year I am sorry but this can't be true...Insider are your numbers real? If so why isn't this looked at? I am still unclear if the employee has to pay for the vehicles gas or are tax payers paying for gas as well?

Granted if you calculated how much time they put in versus the $10K it would probably only be cents on the hour but they should run to serve, not for pay. If they have legitimate expenses then that should be reimbursable but that is all.

I'm going to let someone else do the research this time since this will be the third time we've discussed it here. Don't forget to check inspectors, engineering (though the head engineer's position is unfilled) and the detectives. It's a long list. Also, unless there is an ordinance that precludes this benefit from being considered part of compensation, then it can also be factored into pensions.
