Thanks for the info, Jim. Love learning more about them. Question for you: they seem to have some pretty well defined roles in the relationship between mates. Is that similar with most birds?

LWN, I think I'm missing something.....I can't figure out what your point is. ???

The point is EVERY SINGLE TIME there is a changing of the guard, you guys always refer to it as Mama being replaced by Papa.
Now, either some serious sex changing is going on, or you guys miss it EVERY TIME Mama returns to the nest. Wingnut, compare to the pheasants. Male the better looking , can ya live with that wolfman?
Jim , how big would ya have to make a nest box. I have two pines higher then the sourounds, with ponds, brooks , and field fer hunting. I'd love too set up a nest box for the Ofspray , Eagles, or other valley birds of prey.Plenty of hawks and falcons in the area too. Do ya need a permit? What say you? |

That is not my point. I am VERY well acquainted with osprey.
What I find puzzling is not that they look different, but that not a single time, given all the watching going in here, has anyone seen the female relieve the male. It's strange... I get it, LWN. Truth be - I, personally, have never seen Mama relieving Papa...luck of the draw. No stereotyping or other going on...
You're certainly more knowledgeable about Osprey than I am - perhaps Jim's post (see NOTES) explains: male feeds female (thus assuming that Mama leaves for shorter periods of time), and male egg sits only occasionally (perhaps up to 30%). |

OHHHHH! Now I get it! Duh. Yes, I've seen her come back fairly often as a matter of fact.

Now if mama is on the nest and papa returns, is that not being relieved of duty? or vice a verse. I don't get the point, at every exchange one or the other
has to be the reliever right??Other then our duly observant watches using the term "Mama or Papa". That what ya talking bout Willis?

Jim , how big would ya have to make a nest box. MH Check out this pdf from Canada. I don't know if Maine has any regulations restricting the building of osprey platforms. You can check that out with the folks at Maine Audubon.call or email them. A wooden pallet or skid with a couple of railings works fine. If you are going for eagles make sure the base is really sturdy. If it is successful eagles will return to the nest every year and add to it. Some older eagle nest can weigh a ton (not a figure of speech). Just don't build one over the road or sidewalk where it might fall or the birds might attack the locals. |

Bigger is better, nevermind what she told ya....
Perch off to the side for the male so he doesn't have to stand out in the field all night. |

the great egrets are around this morning! | ||
Wasn't fast enough to get them in flight (except the last one on the left landing), but you can see them on the water's edge, one on the right just about above Mama's head and the other two on the left over her tail area. I had contacted the Andubon center earlier this season after seeing them a few times to confirm and they told me they have quite a number of them nesting there this season. I spotted the one on the right in beautiful flight much closer to the cam, but wasn't quite enough on the draw to snap it, dammit! |

Mama seems very fond of the orange "thingy" and the yellow "ribbon" (?)...keeping them close. Presents for the newly hatched?????
Later - now Mama keeps trying to move the yellow strip of plastic (I think) out of her way, but it appears to be stuck on a twig...

Yo, Wingnut.
Ya coming this way and know Osprey, how ya at climbing trees with a chain saw? Sthil 024, put you up in the Hard tent till the jobs complete. Might take a while if ya as wild as ya say, could be BAD COMPANY. Bet neither you nor I would recall any of it. But the birds may win?????? |

Looks like they've incorporated something like a piece of crime scene tape into the decor. Heh. No hatchlings as of today when I got a look at the clutch.
Could be any time now.

Crime scene tape ? Must be too keep them peering eyes from getting in the way of a full investigation . Ever notice how each of em' check the nest when
they change dutys? Ya'd think it was another O. J. investigation. Very carefull parenting.
