Something tells me that the fire department doesn't know how to manage! "Allowing" up to 5 firefighters to be absent per shift is not only insane but also a huge safety issue.You nailed it Dun. As it stands the scenario can have five FF's out on PAID LEAVE and then REHIRE 5 more at time and 1/2. I think that can be additional $4000 a day drain based on some numbers I've seen.
If that happens 1/2 of the year that is an additional $720,000 ($4000 x 180).
However, if the city hired 5 more fulltime FF's at $67,000 a year (number provided by Fire Chief at last night's CC meeting) that would be $335,000.
A savings of $385,000
But the city cannot cut OT and not hire more FF's. There is more to this story than greedy union workers. The political will to keep a fully manned fire dept is not their. And this is nothing new. It would be refreshing to see both sides act in good faith and in the best interest of the citizenry. We deserve it.
