As soon as the discussion dies down someone else chimes in with erroneous reports that make it look as if the City will be digging into it's own pockets to pay for the project. This is simply not the case, but the folks that either A don't understand, or B understand but want to mislead people keep on propagating the lies and misinformation. He will fill out the paperwork as part of the lease agreement. If the lease is 1200 a month, it will be 50 bucks for taxes. So they will save 10 bucks a month and the city will lay off teachers. Great deal for the city if you are still trying to say that the lack of a TIF is a dealbreaker, it is kinda late.

I'd be very surprised if the majority of those stores in the controversial Glosta Crossing ever open. There seems to be a retail build craze that looks a lot like the housing craze. Drive down Rt1 and you'll see no less then 4 and perhaps more major strip malls under construction. Just like with housing, the bubble will burst. The tenants are slated to be the very same stores that are now posting quarterly losses. With the enormous fuel and food increases we are facing, who can afford to buy anything at Pier 1? Come October there is going to be a major meltdown. Be warned.

Many are entry level jobs that will be available for Cape Ann's youth. Jobs for single parents and jobs for those who are reitired and still want a part time job to make ends meet. Then you have to factor in the contracting jobs for the carpenters,masons,electricians and plumbers who will build it. Then there is service jobs for those who will be hired for maint. and landscaping! Sure there's room for negotiation and what would be ideal is for both sides to meet for a win win situation. I would think that goal is attainable, and the prudent thing to do!

They won't use local laborers. Just yesterday some company from Rockland was street cleaning by my house. The paving being done downtown is a company from Revere. The new condos being built at Babson farm. All out of town contractors. While the City encourages growth and building, they should mandate a portion to local people. Leftie. No comments to you. Your brain works differently than mine. You are a self touted scholar that is always right. So OK. My 20 years in education aren't enough for you. Sorry!

The building market is way down partly because materials are obscenely expensive and yet contractors are still charging 2005 prices. The city will go to the best bid and my guess is, if Gloucester contractors want the jobs, then they will have to adjust their bids accordingly. We no longer live in Ma, but we are having roof work done and we although we wanted to hire locals, we contracted out of state because the bids were hugely different.

There's a difference...but it's a minor point. Park should be MADE to sub-contract to locals as part of any deal he strikes with the city.

Agreed in gov't funding, but when you add in private donations from US Citizens I believe we provide the most aid to others (can't research that right now, but will try to look later to confirm). In regard to the tax reduction, it's an incentive. It's rather typical and an elementary item to attract and retain businesses.
