A better comparison than adding onto your home would be a first time home buyers discounted finance rates, it's an incentive! I'm still not understanding how it's money coming out of your pocket as you stated... "he does not deserve money that will come out of our pockets to do it."

Kinda like the $800,000 road improvement to N. Bennet just a couple of years after the developer was counting his millions. Please!

So far as I understand it he isnt going for a TIF. What he has done, in conjunction with the City and approved last night with the City Council is to apply for a MORE Grant from the State that would, if he is successful, give him a state grant (no cost to the city). He's not applying for a TIF, but IS applying for a state grant, "which won't cost the city anything?" But we taxpayers are paying for the state grant, and it's costing us. A lotta gobbledegook, imo. It's all public money, and we're now talking about which purse it comes from, but it's coming from OUR tax pockets. Sorry, but he can go borrow it in the private sector, and do his profit and loss statements, w/o further help from the taxpayers. Not to mention the speculation that he's got direct pipelines to very big private money, both locally and elsewhere. Seems to me, one way or another, we're giving away the store. And that equals dumb to me. considering all the other factors.

So the State should offer grants, but no one should get one? If you have a problem with the State Grants, take it up with Deval, you can't fault Parks that this resource is made available to him. If they are available to Mr Parks as a resource, he'd be a fool not to apply for it. Seems you guys are going after the wrong party here.

This city has lacked long term planning since the concept existed. Y DEVELOP is supposed to pose the question to which you supply the answer. I am not a simple obstructionist. I know many who fight change at every step. I simply am stopping to ask the question, "why are we doing this"? As a city we cannot improve our lot with short term decisions that may ultimately destroy our chance for a bright future. I have had many tourists comment on the unique nature of Gloucester, and believe it or not, they actually love it. As the saying goes you never really see home until you leave and return again. Let's not sell it to a slick developer whose only interest is his and $$$. Malls are a dime a dozen and with consumer confidence being at a 20 year all time low I find this whole project baffling.

Did the Gloucester House get state or city tax reductions for the new restaurant and now the Compass room function thing? What about Latitude 42.5? Was there some kind of a grant for the Rockport bank branch at Parker and Main or the Cooperative one at Pleasant and Main? My reservation is based on my perception that we are creating two categories of business in Gloucester, those that are favored with public investment and those that are not. The problem is long standing and not just about TIFs. For example we paid for all kinds of infrastructure for industrial parks up in the woods, but demanded that our oldest and historically most productive industrial park, the waterfront, install and pay for their own sewerage pretreatment which drove much of the shoreside employment in processing to other cities.
