CAO was, and still is, intended for the public, and as such cannot have the security (password protection) of a private board. I recall Jackalope setting up his "Hutch" to keep out the "riffraff" (Pro-Americans), which didn't work out so well. Because this is a truly public board, there will be those who abuse anonymity to get some immature jollies. What I never quite understood is the strong connection between this kind of behavior and self proclaimed right wing politics. Is it that the nasty types, being bent on irritating as many other members as possible, simply adopt Limbaugh neoconspeak simply to accomplish this? IMHO, this board, for all its failings, is a better place than it once was, and is attributable, I think, to a large core of posters who have known each other for a long time. It may also be that most of us have grown better about responsible anonymity. Some degree of anonymity allows us to be public, but without the public scrutiny. To be honest though, so many of us know each other personally that this is not a very anonymous board any longer. As such, I'm thinking this group might even be able to arrange a gathering (announced here), to which a large number of us would feel comfortable about attending. Years ago, we tried to set up a beach party for the board (Cape-Ann.com). It was talked up a lot and there seemed to be a lot of interest, but when the day came, Natalie, Damon and I were the only shows. Since then, there is more and more talk here of having met other members in person. This is making a fundamental change in the behavior here. You will notice that those who spew the insults most often are the ones with the very biggest stake in anonymity.
