The only place I remember for Roger B. was in a stall on the state fish pier to be combined with a Legal Seafoods processing operation. It did not fly because
a retail restaurant facility is not supposed to go on the state fish pier according to its charter.

I think Park Place ought to be series of big box chain stores and fast food joints. Legal Seafoods opening in the seaside fishing town of Gloucester, in a
strip mall, off the highway? Are you serious?

Yes, with consumer confidence at a 20 year low and gas prices at an all time high a strip mall 1950's style is Gloucester on the move 50 years too late and so backward I can't begin to educate the masses. |

Just read the first 18 pages on Google Book Search. Tells the story, doesn't it? From the perspective of those who can never tell...

Gang. I totally agree about the Building Center. It would be convenient. They could expand and the waterfront would open up. Fantastic idea.

I'm with you on the 20 year low on consumer confidence, yes it's a fact. But, with all time high gas prices is has to be a better idea to create and promote stores and shopping in your local area. |

I think that would be a good place of the BC (given that destroying what was already there is a fait accompli). But I believe the owner is firmly on record
that the present location is where it will stay until the sun goes nova.

We should think along the lines of not what we want but what Gloucester really needs.
1. Market Basket (to keep Stop and Shop and Shaws honest). Drive-in location has been talked about for years, just don't see it happening. 2. Target/Walmart/K-Mart or something along this line. Since Ames closed there has not been a consistent place for everyday needs. 3. Sports Authority/Models/Dicks -- Nothing against Palazolas as they have been a solid part of Main Street forever but with all of the youth sports in Gloucester there needs to be a real sporting goods store. 4. Staples -- need for a real office store. 5. AC Moore or some sort of crafts store. The rest can be speciality type small stores (maybe a toy store, STARBUCKS, wine and cheese shop, bookstore) |

I have traveled in all 50 states, and the communities that really stand out to me as thriving, livable places are the ones where there is a good variety of
locally owned stores.
Too bad the only choices for this place seem to be chains. The Main Street / Downtown Gloucester area has not served daily shoppers for some time. LWN, it seems to me that this is because smaller stores cannot offer
everyday goods at the price point that the average Gloucester resident can tolerate. They simply don't have the buying power that real department stores
do.
And when they DO have the buying power, like a Shaws or Stop and Shop, and choose to abuse it by holding us captive to price gouging, residents will go elsewhere, further hurting the smaller shops that might have otherwise retained business through loyalty or service. I've asked myself this question numerous times in the years that I've lived on Cape Ann - Why is Gloucester so different from Newburyport? I was driving through the center of Ipswich a few weekends ago and was thinking the same sort of thing. Why is Ipswich Center thriving, but Gloucester is not?
