There is, from what I am told a City Charter Commission forming again.
One of their goals is to give the Mayor a 4 year term. Mayor Kirk got left holding the "Bell Bag" and it is going to take her a year to bring order, so she needs 4 years. Look last year Bell asked for money for Gloucester Crossing and got 0.00 a year later Kirk get 2,000,000.00! Also, staggered terms for the City C. I would like to see term limits as well. Say 3 terms? They are looking for volunteers to collect signatures. Contact your City C for info. |

MagnoliaTownPlaya which of the women are you for? The one that doesn't pay taxes or salute the flag or the other "democrat" that supported
Healey?
Are either of these women planning of being full-time reps? I don't see them shutting down their law practices. You say Verga has barely any clout even as a Chairman. So we would be better off with a backbencher with absolutely no clout? How will the democratically controlled house look upon a member who ran as a democrat for convenience or one who sits out the pledge at the start of each session? You also imply that he is dishonest. So at 70+ he is just padding is pension? Or maybe his Portagee Hill mansion tells the story. People tend to interpret a vote they don't agree with as "the bastard doesn't listen to his constituents." I am sure a Rep AMF or AaK can't vote both ways either. In case you couldn't tell I voting for TV. |

I don't think he's dishonest....I think he loves his job, ask him and he'll tell you it's the best gig he's ever had...that he can live off the state teet the rest of his life is a testament to what a great country this is. Perhaps you could share some of his many legislative accomplishments? |

I fail to see where the $2 mil benefits the city, a grant to a mulitmillionare is what I read. Tarr and Verga bring next to nothing back to Gloucester, they
should step aside and allow new blood a chance. Maybe they can use the left over lumber from the reconstruction of the maritime center to fill the potholes,
nice job Tony.

"i like her white knuckle aproch i hope no one dies in lanesvile or magnolia"
Well, they have and will continue to. A person died not too long ago on Lexington Avenue and the woman died in the house fire in Lanesville. Neither death changed a thing and these fire stations were closed without Kirk, so her permanently closing them doesn't change a thing. |

What exactly are people expecting our representatives to "bring back" to the area? I can't think of anything more important than jobs.

gloman - Agreed, aside from the term limits. I think the voters should always set the limits of one's public service on the local/municipal level.
fakescreenname - #1 - There is no room for religious intolerance in our politics, in our public discourse, in our community or on this posting board. Astrid is a Quaker and you along with everyone in this district should respect that and her commitment to her faith. Such arguments only degrade your argument, your integrity and the overall decency of the people in the Essex 5th. Keep your trash talk in this regard to your own, bigoted self. #2 - The tax issue is a legitimate concern, though she has addressed it to some extent. This is an issue that should be questioned further as the campaign continues. #3 - Not sure about the law practices, but that is definately an issue of commitment that should be questioned as well. #4 - AMF's support of Healy is also a legit issue, but don't forget that Mayor Bell--a fairly loyal Democrat who supported John Kerry in '04 and is currently working for/volunteering for Obama--also endorsed Healy in '06. But regardless, one should still question her on what personal values she holds that define her as a true democrat. Someone should tell her quoting Bobby Kennedy just isn't going to cut it honey. BUT--As it is, we already have a State Representative who is a closet Republican, with his opposition to abortion rights and gay marriage, while stupidly supporting prayer in our schools. At least with AMF, we would benefit from new, historically effective energy in the State Rep. seat. #5 - Again, quit with the bigoted comments regarding the PoA. It only demeans you as a human being. A Chairman with lackluster energy and clout is MUCH WORSE than a possible rising star with the energy, ideas and intelligence necessary to draw attention to the issues facing our city and towns. #6 - What the heck does his age have to do with him being honest? And yes, I do think he's staying in there so he simply can keep a job, and more so, in order to keep the seat in the family--why he didn't pass it off to Greg this time around, I just don't know. I think Tony missed the ship. Honesty is something rare in politics, and Mr. Verga's quid pro quo driven decisions only reinforce that cynical perception of politics. Again, the people of Gloucester, Rockport and Essex not only need better, we DESERVE better. There's no denying that. |
