Unfortunately Par his assessment is accurate. I don't think she should "step down", however she turned this into a media circus. Calling a press
conference without any answers and not having talked to the principle, or kids that are pregnant, or their parents made her look unprepared and defensive. She
could have turned this around to address the teen pregnancy issue instead she was trying to do damage control on the pact or lack of a pact which seemed more
important to her. Instead of putting this to bed Kirk has given the media a couple more days of headlines.

Come on now, that is pretty harsh. Calling a press conference was a mistake as it kept the story at the top of the news for a few more days. From what I hear a "gag" order has been placed on all city employees to not give any more interviews. It is too bad that order didn't go into place before the Chairman of the School Committee and the Superintendent decided to give every interview under the sun without any thoughtful research and analysis. If I were to give grades on this mess I would give: Kirk: B -- for getting out in front and taking charge away from the Chairman and the Superintendent. Should never have taken questions yesterday and looked bad by not having HS Principal at her side during press conference. HS Principal: C+ -- should have held his tongue with Time magazine but I actually think he is being the most truthful here and is taking one for the team as everyone is trashing him and his reputation. Would like to hear his side of this story. Chairman of SC: D -- looked like a deer in the headlights in his interviews. Why in the world would he bring up his own situation of being an 18 year old father with his wife at 17? Very bad judgment on his part. Also, short sleeve shirts with a tie is not a good look. Superintendent: D -- appeared to be a media hound on this. Seemed like he couldn't get in front of cameras fast enough. In the CNN interview he looked smug and did the city no favors in the way he presented himself. Health Care Officials: F -- 150 pregnancy tests? This can't be normal? Did they inform the administration? If not, then they get an F, if they did then why was a crisis management meeting not called? Superintendent and HS Principal were asleep at the helm on this one if they were aware and did nothing. |

Methinks the world disagrees with these criticisms. Feedback from friends and relatives, near and far, is all congratulatory, about the press conference.
People see it as taking control of a situation that spun out of control last week. The press conference is bringing about new focus everywhere, on how public
officials, parents, educators, others involved can mprove on how services are focused and delivered.

Kirk in that news conference showed herself to be a dissembling, parsing apologist for the absolute failure of the
obscenely expensive failures of the greedy, incompetent Teachers Union MONOPOLY and the Welfare State that helped
foster the degeneracy behind this pathetic development. I would believe Sullivan, Todd, and the others here who have confirmed this story in a heartbeat
before taking the word of such an equivocating boob.
Kirk is beginning to make our prior mayoral malfeasants look competent in in comparison. |

My opinion is that the mayor did a good job in a bad situation. The mayor is trying to get control of a problem that seems to be growing by the hour rather
then subsiding. The mayor could have been better prepared for the media vultures who bombarded her with loaded questions, she should have established talking
points for herself and the other city officials present and not stray from those talking points. It was a horrible position to be tossed into and over all the
mayor did fairly well.

I don't agree with the way the Mayor handled this media circus, but think she is doing a pretty good job with many of the other issues. It is a little
early to write her off. Let's give her a chance to get things under control. She is still working under the "Bell" budget and is trying to clean
up the financial mess while filling major vacancies.

I don't think when Mayor Kirk ran for the job of mayor she ever expected, nor did anyone else, that she would be having a nationally televised press
conference. This is a small town, that is not normally part of the mayor's job. I do think she was in over head and kind of lost her credibility on the
issue. I agree with VB on Fox 25 also, without having talked with Dr. Sullivan or any of the pregnant girls and their families she should not have addressed
the media. But not many people in this town are media savvy, she doesn't have any advisors on this and who would ever have expected this to be such deal
all over the world. It is a serious local problem that needs to be dealt with, but not national or international.

OldBig3- I agree with you, especially regarding the chairman's shirt/tie combo. That look is usually reserved for managers of fast food joints.

I think that is the school committee member that was PAID for an interview. At least according to someone that knows him well. The look was ridiculous. Put on
a suit and tie. This is national news dumbass.
And I would agree that he just may not be the best spokesperson given the fact that he knocked up a high school girl. What is she thinking letting him on TV. Duct tape the lot of the them and forbid them from granting any interviews. |

Oak, the world does not see it as you do. Not necessarily my opinion, but if you got to listen to Jim and Margery (12-3pm) or Michelle McPhee (7-10pm) on WTKK
96.9, or Dan Rhea on WBZ 1030 (8-12 midnight), you heard that most thought the Mayor made a mockery of the situation. From listening, it seemed that most
callers were pro-Sullivan in this case, and thought Mayor Kirk did not do very well. If anyone wants to listen to them, the WTKK shows are podcasted on their
website.

I supported Carolyn Kirk when she ran for Mayor, and I voted for her.
I think she did a good job yesterday in a tough situation. She was not a media mastermind, but that's not who the city voted (overwhelmingly) for. I voted for a competent manager who can gain some control over our dire financial situation and begin to turn it around. In her first six months on the job, she has done exactly that. So she's only competent, not excellent, at handling an international media circus. That's fine with me, as I am willing to bet anybody two nickels that she will never again be called upon to do such a thing. However, it's quite disconcerting to find myself in agreement with Retired. It's a new thing for me, and it's not sitting well. I'll have to figure that one out. |

Just as an aside.........there was a retirement party for Everett Brown last night and I didn't see the Mayor there. Bruce Toby, Gus Foote, Ab Khambaty Joe
Ciolino. Jackie Hardy and Sefatia were there and various employees of the city. It was a very nice time and a nice goodbye for Everett. I was just a little
surprised that Everett's boss didn't pop in for a minute, but I'm sure she had very good reason for not being there. She's had her hands full
in the last six months............

Firstly, Mayor Kirk absolutely should not step down.
However, I still wonder what the goal was of that press conference. For anyone who thinks it helped Gloucester's cause, read this. http://gretawire.foxnews.com/2008/06/23/on-the-record-vote-2/all-comments/#comments |

The same Mayor Kirk who had a hissy fit when Congress wouldn't allow her to make a presentation to them seeking federal funds for Gloucester? Methinks she is thrilled to have a national audience, though she might have preferred an easier subject. |

Was it not the principal or super that brought up the "pact" in the interview with Time magazine? I commend Kirk for stepping in and getting things
straightened out, damage control is what was needed in this fiasco, if anyone should be on the block, I think it would be the principal or super for his
comments. She was put in a very tough spot and I think she did an adequate job.
