Martin Del Vecchio wrote: Of course she can do what she wants with her money. Of course it's not a bad thing either. It's not about the money ($1000 is not going to make
college possible for someone who wouldn't otherwise be able to go), IMO it's about the message it can send to those who get pregnant and choose to keep
their baby and those who choose not to get pregnant.

Who cares if it benefits her career? It's absurd to judge an act as good only if it has no benefit to the person committing the act.I agree. That wasn't my point. All I was saying was that this issue has invited all sorts of exploitation via publicity. The fact that this particular gesture might be well-intended has nothing to do with the fact that it also exploits the heavy media attention and in that way, perpetuates what I think would be best not stoked, but extinguished as quickly as possible. That, IMO, would be in the best interests of these kids. Do you believe that all this frenzy of publicity is helping anyone or is it perhaps adding to the problem?

I got this second hand, but I also got the news about a "pact" 4th or 5th hand. On the TV interview, the girl indicated that the "pact"
(which IS the big deal here) came after the pregnancies, not before the pregnancies. The "pact" according to her, was an agreement to stick together and to be friends
during and after their pregnancies. Apparently one thing which hasn't changed much is the fact that pregnant teens are often shunned and lose their
friends in the process. This sure puts a different spin on this entire media circus. It sounds more like
girls who have made mistakes, and are trying to make the best it, rather than girls who have plotted out of desperation to play the welfare system. It also
sounds a lot like another case of right wing hysteria about "limousine liberals" and "welfare queens", and a desperate attempt to
"prove" that welfare abuse is rampant.

Jesus, OH - careful with that thoughtful and reasoned analysis...you'll piss a lot of people off here.

No kidding, OH. Well said. Sex sells, doesn't it? Especially among the right wingers who get so fussed about it.

Hold on there OH, are you telling me the pregnant girls aren't going to have lives of luxury, living off the teat of the state? I thought that they would
be given Bentleys, and homes on the back shore? I thought all these girls got pregnant so they could ride the wave of the good life...

If indeed any of these girls got pregnant on purpose it has more to do with ignorance and less to do with planning a rosy future. Gloucester has always had
the trickle-down theory of families following the welfare plan. It really isn't a whole lot different than back in the late 60's when I was in High
School. It was just looked at differently and handled differently. There was "shame" attached to being that unwed mother and many were sent away
only to return 7 or 8 months later and "never discuss it again". When single shines the triple sun, What was sunder |

This is just another OJ Simpson kind of a never ending "news" blitz, except without a crime to make it interesting. It's getting worse all the
time!

I have no doubt your jaw dropped, Gyps. I'm sure you don't. It is just impossible for me to wrap my mind around anyone being sufficiently small-minded and suspicious to question the motives of someone genuinely willing to try to do good. Dunkin Donuts sends coffee to the firemen when they are fighting a fire, artists all over Cape Ann (and the country) contribute work to try to raise funds for charitable causes, so why in God's name would anyone with a shred of human decency suspect the motives of a writer who writes about the problems of teen pregnancies, offer a scholarship to encourage a pregnant teen to stay in school and get accepted into college? We need a LOT more Sarah Young's in this world and a lot fewer mean-spirited, small-minded critics of such generosity! In my humble opinion, of course....
