I'm thinking the Vista or the Ocean View. Any other suggestions/recommendations?
Thanks in advance to one and all.

Best hotel/motel/place to stay on Cape Ann? |
Lead | |
|
My family is planning an August visit and hasn't yet made reservations. (!) I'm wondering where I should suggest they book a room? The more amenities
the better - mom isn't really one for "rustic," "homey," or "quaint." Clean is a must. Smoking too (unfortunately.)
I'm thinking the Vista or the Ocean View. Any other suggestions/recommendations? Thanks in advance to one and all. |

I stayed at the Ocean View once... and only Once...
First off, they put me in the WRONG building, it was the motel part in the back.. I had reserved the main building, I think they refer to it as "The Manor"... It was 90 degrees during the daytime, and the A/C did not work. The cinder block walls were literally sweating... The windows didn't open all of the way, so I couldn't even enjoy the ocean breeze. Then, the pool wasn't open for some retarded reason, and that was one of the reasons I had booked there. with my 2 kids, pools are handy.. Then, after sweating all night long, all I wanted to do in the morning was take a long shower, and cool off.... but when I stepped in, and opened my eyes... there was MILDEW all in the grout!! and it wasn't just in one spot either.. like the far corner.. and you guys know I am a complete freak when it comes to clean.. So when I called to complain, the desk person SERIOUSLY said to me.. "Well, you can't ALWAYS get all of it, and it has been rainy" WHAT?? they had to have been kidding me... So I told them, that I have 2 bathrooms at my own house, and neither one of them has mildew, and it was certainly just as rainy in Maine as it was in Gloucester... a little bit of bleach and a toothbrush and MAYBE 10 extra minutes would have solved that problem... Sure, they put me in the Manor House the next night, but the bathroom still wasn't clean enough for me... I mean come on... They have people to Clean these rooms every damn day.. How hard is it??? I give a Thumbs Down to that place... |

I would have to say either the atlantis or bass rocks. the price is high but at least they're closed in the off season and don't rent to the area
shitbums like a lot of the others do. Not that you can ever be sure but I would prefer a place that doesn't have junkies, homeless people and sex offensers
living in it during the winter.

The Atlantis or the Vista would be the best choice. The Bass Rocks Best Western is ridiculously expensive...and you get the same view and a pool as you would
with the Atlantis, and to a lesser extent, the Vista.
However, the Ocean View does have "Smoking" rooms, though I would not recommend that establishment to any extent. Remember, you can smoke on the balconies of the rooms in the Atlantis and the Vista while overlooking Good Harbor and the Backshore. I would also recommend checking out the Cape Ann Motor Inn that overlooks Long Beach...the owner was just honored as the Small Business Person of the year by the local Chamber of Commerce. I hear the place is up and coming. Speaking of which, the chamber does have a great Accommodations finder where you can pick and choose the amenities you'd like....http://www.capeannvacations.com/accommodations.cfm. Enjoy your stay on Cape Ann!

I have rental property through atlanticvacationhomes.com. I am sorry to say though that we are completely booked for the month of August. Give them a try. You
can find any type of rental you are looking for whether you want upscale or an average home. In my opinion, you get WAY MORE for your money. You can view the
properties and prices right on line and you see what is still available. Most of the popular homes book early in the year.

The ATLANTIS. Clean, oceanfront. Can walk, or ride bikes to Good Harbor or Niles Beaches,1/2-1 mile, or use the local Cape Ann Transportation Authority
(C.A.T.A.) frequent around Cape Ann buses, thereby avoiding beach parking fees, or parking meters in downtown shopping areas, and frequent pkg tickets.
Beautiful clean nice pool, across road, from the open ocean. Great am breakfast dining room. Pleasant helpful staff. Lg private pkg lot behind the building.

Not a lot to pick from I guess. We definitely need some better class hotels.

"chain-type" hotel. Which, I have to say, would be most appealing to my folks. Now that they're older and can't get around as easily, a place
where they know what to expect and can find all the usual hotel amenities (elevator, coffee pot, hair dryer, etc.) is definitely more attractive than a
fireplace or well-appointed lobby. They'll probably wind up at the Cape Ann Motor Lodge or Vista, just from a money and convenience standpoint. Thanks to
everyone for the recommendations and ideas.

I understand that, Kalesy. I absolutely hate staying in a place that does not have all the amenities, especially the coffee pot and elevator!
Another option would be to get a hotel room somewhere in the Danvers/Peabody area and spend the daytime in Gloucester. I hate to send anyone "out of town" for accomodations but Gloucester doesn't really have much to offer in a really good hotel. Sprinkle had a good idea in renting a house through the vacation rental place...would probably be much more comfortable than a room. |

possible. If I give her the option of staying in a place that looks like home - she'll try to cook, clean, and all that other fun stuff!

Kalesy - have you checked out Rockport? There are some very nice inns, some offering continental breakfast. Run from five star to medium priced.
OK - ready for the knock on the head... Only things that have no power of choice are perfect. Nature is, man isn't. |

I've stayed at both the Vista and the Cape Ann Motor Lodge. Vista is better appointed; more modern and updated. But you can't beat CAML for the
location. You're already at the beach, which is huge in the middle of the summer, especially on the weekends. The handicapped room is often available and
you don't have to be handicapped. It is the best room for just a couple as it has only one double bed, but a great modernized bathroom, and easiest access
to lobby where there is coffee and an internet attached computer available, as well as easy loading and unloading and access to the beach. And a bit cheaper
than the Vista at that. If you have young kids, they will love the rocks at low tide catching crabs, etc. Also, if you have kids, some of the other rooms are
larger and have kitchenettes. It's the most user friendly place on the cape, imo; also great is the Good Harbor Beach Inn, but not as updated and almost
impossible to get a reservation after May.
Good luck and have a blast. |
