Insider - do you remember if a public hearing is mandated by MA General Laws if there is a proposed increase to water/sewer rates?
Only things that have no power of choice are perfect. Nature is, man isn't. |

One way or the other it has to be paid for. There is no free lunch -- not even a free drink of water.
How many of you whining about the water and sewer rates vote down overrides? If so, you've gotten what you voted for. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

The override that was voted down in 2004 would have had NO impact on water and sewer rates nor would the override for the Sawyer Free Library.

And you think an override to pay for the CSO would have fared any differently?
Voters are out of touch with reality. They think they don't have to pay taxes yet can have a full suite of services for nothing... To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

Dear GABBY |

Right , the override was supposedly to stabelize the funds for firedepartments and schools depts remember.... thats why immediately after WE voted it down
the threats were followed with action. I think it was the next day, fire deparment layoffs, and school teachers ..... I would like to know where does the xtra
monies go like lottery revenues go into what fund for the city ( I think it was posted 3 million to gloucester) and other projects that the city takes on for
monies... movies , boats etc......

If you vote against overrides, then user fees (e.g., water and sewer rates) are going to go up. Sorry, but that is reality, unlike the nonsense that he right
has been filling your head with all these years.
And I doubt that water and sewer bills are going to cause you to lose your home. If so, you have been living WAY beyond your means... And if they truly are, then USE LESS WATER!!! To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

Let me put it this way... someone in here was whining because their last quarterly water/sewer bill was about $350. That comes to an annual bill of about
$1400. The proposed increases are about 25%. This family's increase would be about $350.
If $350 spread out over a year is going to cause you to lose your home, then your problems are a LOT more serious than increasing water rates. It's simply silly in the extreme to blame all your problems on this. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

I have always, always, always .... going back to the North Gloucester sewer fiasco .... been of the opinion that the costs of any major sewer or water project
should be borne by all residents. We all benefit from a cleaner river, a cleaner harbor. I just think it's craziness .... utterly crazy that all these
years people got city sewer as part of general city services .....but suddenly, "new" sewer hookups are on the homeowners. Crazy.

People need to learn that they don't need to shower on a daily basis. It strips your skin and hair of natural oils.

Roxie wrote: 100% true, Rox... but doing so requires voters to get their heads out of their asses and realize that they need to vote for an override or an exclusion. Most voters' thinking goes no further than "Ugh!! Tax increase, bad! Tax cut, good!! Ugh!!" And then they pay more in user fees... The Republican plan to shift the tax burden from wealthy people to the middle and working classes has worked, obviously, with the collusion of many in those very same demographics. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

No kidding, huh? I don't get it ... well, I do understand somewhat, that people are skittish about the way finances are handled in the city. But what I
do get is .... wtf, all these services need to be paid for somehow.
I have voted "for" every override in recent memory, because I get it. Errr ... except for the Pole's Hill thing ... |

Let me put it this way-
Heating bills are expected to double - 1400 year est verizon has gone up 6 month - 72 year est TV - Basic 7 month - 84 year Grocerys from toilet paper to milk . chicken - 25week 1, 300 year gas up 1.50 gal and expected to go up to 5 gal - increase approx 2000 year electric rates up - approx 600 year if we take the water and sewer 350 year _ your guess not mine- thats approx 10.000 - thats my husbands 2nd income - or my barely over min. wage job that I had to take because of the no monies for department after significant raisess went through for the hierarchies I just cannot afford it frankly---- I dont want to , cannot afford to pay one more dime towards the brown water that we are bestowed with from the City |

What about income tax cuts? Those are the worst of all. Federal aid to states is down, shifting more and more infrastructure costs to the states. And state
revenues have not kept up either, so allocations to municipalites are down. It all "trickles down" to the local citizen and PROPERTY TAXES... so,
voting to cut a progressive tax (income taxes) ALWAYS shifts tax burdens to regressive taxes (property, sales, user fees). Anyone who voted for cuts to state
or federal income taxes, or for politicians who support such things, has nothing to complain about re: user fees increasing or pressure on municipal budgets.
They are simply getting what they voted for.
The rest of us, on the other hand... Dear GABBY wrote: It seems to me that water rates are the least of your problems. Why don't you go to the grocery store, your gas station, or your energy (i.e., heat)
supplier and demand that they lower their prices? After all, if you expect the City not to pass on their costs to you, why do you accept the grocery store or
the gas company doing the same? Did they ask your permission first? Did they have a public hearing before doing so?
There is NO FREE LUNCH. The costs have to be paid. Let me ask you this: Have you ever voted for a Republican? Have you ever voted for a cut in income taxes? If so, they you have no right to complain. You have gotten what you voted for. I hear ya, Gabby .... cripes, everyone is getting hit. We heard from Cape Pond Ice about what the water increase will do to them. And all the inns, motels
and hotels ..... geez, they may institute timed showers, lol. Seriously .... aside from ourselves personally, think about what these water increases will do
to so many businesses. Fasten your seat belts, kids .... it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Leftwingnut.
Voters never rejected an override for the CSO project....John Bell never let them decide on that one. General overrides have NO impact on water and sewer rates. And yes, I do think an override for the CSO would pass.....80% of the voters are paying 100% of the cost so 80% of them would vote yes to spread the burden to 100% of the property owners....thus lowering bills for 80%. |
