Night - totally agree. Do you think these "Listening Posts" and "Blue Ribbon Panel" meeting will assist in letting "the issue dies in
the press quietly"?

as well.

or perhaps it shows that this city actually gives a damn about dealing with this issue instead of letting slip out of the consciousness of our city's attention and our society's mind. yeah, gloucester's
taken a hit reputation-wise with this. there's nothing about the situation that doesn't stink. but the fact is, we could potentially serve as an
example of what it is for a municipality to face the problem of teen pregnancy head on, address the wide-range of issues contributing to its cause (including
that of parental, family and mentoring involvement) and put forth valid, effective and appropriate steps to reverse this awful trend. and guess what folks?
that's not gonna happen successfully if we leave it to administrators to decide. we have seen what happens when
we leave it to "those in charge" to deal with the issues of gloucester...we end up with the fiscal crisis and ultimate shit-show we have now.
it takes civic involvement. it takes the input of the actual residents of gloucester and those who have an invested interest in what policies are derived over the next two months prior to the start of the new school year. get off this board, go to these meetings and actually provide constructive input with those who will be the deciding voice on this issue. criticize CK all you want, but at least she's reaching out. at least she's listening and at least she's taking active measures to make sure the School Committee hears from everybody who has a stake in this...from the elected officials of gloucester, to those qualified in their respective psychological and social fields, to even---oh what is this!---those people (all of us!) that will face the receiving end of the decisions that are made through our children and grandchildren going through the gloucester school system. if we do this right, we could become an example of a successful failure in dealing with something that just isn't an "international crisis of attention" but rather, a real, shameful and embarrassing failure of our schools and our community in gloucester. the fact that CK is looking for input from us......well, i think that says something about the approach she's trying take, and that involvement ultimately, will only enhance the public discourse, public policy and resultant effects on turning our community around. and then in 10 years perhaps, we'll see a true success story emerge from this disheartening time. |

It's great that she's reaching out...too bad it was too difficult for her to dial 978-281-9865 and ask to speak to Joe Sullivan first....you know,
reach out.

well, clearly someone was lying in that respect. either CK said she had talked to him, and actually didn't. or Sully is spewing some own spin of his own
and trying to throw her under the bus, with reliance on most people generally taking him at his word.
the truth? we might never know. but i think the point is...let's move on from trying to point the finger, among both parties, and start to focus on solving the problem. and CK reaching out in this respect with these listening posts Insider, is the correct and effective way to start that process. |

oh and BTW...even if she had tried to call that number, it wouldn't have worked. Sully was on "vacation."

Kirk admitted that she didn't speak with or try to speak with Sullivan.
He wasn't away and he does have a cell phone.... I agree that this isn't a bad step, but Joe Sullivan's reputation and career has been put in jeopardy....It's easy to "move on" when you're the one driving the bus, but maybe not as easy if you're the one that just got run over. |

She said something like, "I have not spoken with Mr. Sullivan nor do I intend to" or something like that. I'll find it.

Insider2004, I concur completely. The person who I also voted for "took a bullet for our City and would do it again" is slowly sinking in credibility IMHO.

alright well look Insider, it's not the Mayor's job to get in touch with the Principal....it's the job of the Principal's boss....the
Superintendent, a protocol that was adhered to.
They Mayor allowed for the Superintendent to get in touch with him, and that's where those "foggy" comments were derived. i'm not sure that
it would have been appropriate to override the Superintendent in that situation.
oh and Mothership...i can guarantee to you that Sully does not waste his time reading this board. But rather, I think we would take the time to take this entire board, including you Mothership and throw it in font of his own bus, those on his side and not. Thats how he is. |

Mag,
The Mayor made the decision to investigate this, yet you say it's not the Mayor's job to talk to the Principal of the school where the students involved attend, the man quoted in the article that started this media storm, the man who has first hand information, the man who's reputation she was about to ruin, the man who has been the principal for longer than any other principal in the school district and longer than she had been on the school committee and longer than the superintendent has been in this country a man who is probably best able to be an asset in solving this problem, and the man she did not invite to her pre-press conference meeting the man she wasn't going to invite to the press conference and the man who's mental capacity she was about to question in front of the whole world.....which, by the way, she invited to Gloucester. I think the stakes were high enough that 10 digits on a phone were worth dialing. |

The spinning here and in the media is making me dizzy.
Sullivan said he hadn't been contacted by the Mayor .... never mentioned if he had been contacted by the Superintnedent. Sullivan said he stood by everything he told the reporter .... not everything that was written by the reporter. The spin on that whole thing was unbelievable. I never for a minute took it to mean he approved of the way the Time story was reported. Kirk ... I believe she was speaking on what she was fed by Farmer. Not the right thing to do .... and she probably misspoke on a coupla things in her press conference ... but I'm speculating and just don't know what to make of that. I like and respect Joe Sullivan. I like and respect Carolyn Kirk. I do not like and do not respect Mr. Farmer. I have no clue what has gone on between them all and I have no interest in parsing and spinning their statements word for word .... And if y'all think this is dying out in the media .... pay more attention to the rag racks in the stupormarket tomorrow .... a coupla girls gave their story to the National Enquirer .... |

Insider,
How do you still not understand this in retrospect??? THE PRINCIPAL, Dr. Joseph Sullivan, BROUGHT THE WORLD to Gloucester with a simple, four letter word: P A C T. How can you say that the mayor "invited" the world to Gloucester, when it was she who wasn't even in Gloucester when the world arrived, but rather returned to Gloucester to find the world knocking on the front door of City Hall because of Sullivan's comments. HOW DARE SULLIVAN comment on and accuse girls (who HE personally has and DID NOT reached out to) of something that he could not, and still cannot substantiate to one of the most widely-read publications in the world. The press wasn't here because of Farmer or Kirk, or really even those 18 girls that have been forgotten, deamonized and THROWN UNDER THE BUS AND BEFORE THE COURT OF PUBLIC OPINION OF THE WORLD BY SULLIVAN throughout of this. They were here because of Sullivan's PACT. You are right about one thing. Sullivan should have been at the press conference. Then he could have stood before the world and told the media that although he could never, ever prove or substantiate anything he said to TIME magazine that brought the world to this city, and shame to Gloucester, he was sticking by his guns because of rumors he heard from the rumormongers that work for him. Yup, that would have played really, really, really well for Sully and the legitimacy of Gloucester High School as a public institution that protects reputation and privacy of its students. "The World" came to Gloucester Insider, because of the PACT. And Joe Sullivan. Gloucester's reputation is ruined because of the PACT. And Joe Sullivan. Those 18 girls' privacy and reputations were ruined because of the PACT. And Joe Sullivan. Teenage girls of Gloucester, MA became the targets of international scrutiny and harassment because of the PACT. And Joe Sullivan. Carolyn Kirk had to hold that press conference for one reason and one reason only: because of the PACT that Joe Sullivan falsely substantiated. And now she's cleaning up the mess starting by forcing the School Committee and officials to listen to the people that matter: Us. That's the truth of this matter. |

You're right, MagTown ... "The Pact" is what spiraled this into such a firestorm. But it was not Joe Sullivan. In his statement, he said he
does not remember using the word ... but did confirm that he told the reporter that he thought several of the pregnancies were intentional ... something no one
anywhere denies. Time Mag even changed their online headline from "pregnancy pact" to "pregnancy boom." Too little, too late, of course
...

That's your point of view you mean to say.
The School Committee already laid out a process to address the contraception issue, so don't sound all proud that the Mayor is forcing the School Committee to do something...oh, that's the same school committee that did nothing about this when she was on it....when they were informed last year...before 17 girls were pregnant, right? When I use the word invited...yes, the media was running with this story, but a Press Conference is an invitation for the media to come here, and continue with the story. Oh, and Media 101, when all you have to say is....'uh, we can't confirm something", you basically lost your chance at managing that story and then the run with their own story. And here's the "truth" of the matter. Three girls who are pregnant are going to have children who all have the same father. If that's not more than "coincidence" or a "blip" in the statistics as I've heard, then I don't know what is. |
