Basically, I don't like it but sometimes it is necessary --- I couldn't have survived in Houston without it. Fortunately it's not that big of a deal here BUT on warm days like this I drive myself nuts trying to decide whether to turn it on or not. I have a window unit that can effectively cool down my whole apartment but I can never make up my mind whether to turn it on or not. I hate to close the windows when there is a nice breeze --- even if it is a warm breeze. Does anyone else drive themselves nuts this way? Do you worry about the cost and consuming resources (I'm completely ridiculous in that area)? I guess I'm just hoping there is someone else out there who is as much of a fruitcake as I am when it comes to using a/c... I have all my windows wide open and am enjoying the breeze. The humidity is moderately low and my outdoor thermometer reads 83. Overall, very pleasant. Yesterday, it was about the same temperature, but before the squall hit, it was fairly still and it was becoming stifling in my place, so I turned a couple of my units on just to take the humidity out of the air. (I have it when my book covers start to curl from the humidity...) I have a window unit in each room, except for the bawthroom, as Toby over to Rockpawt says... Three are new Energy-star-rated units (Energy star ratings of 10.7), 6000 BTU Frigidaires. They're cheap (about $130 at Lowes) and were rated a Best Buy a couple of years ago by Consumer's Union. I just use them in the rooms I'm using, when I need them, except on the hottest and muggiest of days. I don't think my monthly electricity bill last year ever reached $100, and I cook with electricity as well, so my typical bill is over $50 anyway. Finding such efficient A/C units for that price is quite a deal... that's why I bought a third unit this year. The fourth unit, several years old and given to me by my ex-wife (she was going to toss it), is rarely turned on. I haven't checked a bill lately, but the local rate should be about $ 0.15/kW/Hr. A moderate window A/C is about 5kW, so it will cost you 75 cents per hour to run it full tilt. But you normally won't run it this way. The contemporary units are pretty efficient compared to units of yesteryear, and when the set temperature is reached, the unit goes into a lower cooling rate. And also, even during very warm weather, you probably won't run much more than 8 hours a day. My guess for a modest apartment would be around $5.00 a day worst case. Try comparing that to heating your place with oil now in January. Bottom line: turn it on when you get uncomfortable, and remember the tax advantage on your home office which makes the rate lower. Models without such a feature just cycled the compressor on and off, leaving the fan running during the down part of the cycle. The compressor is always either full on or full off, at least in any A/C I've ever used. I rarely use my a/c more than 3 or 4 times a year and it doesn't make much of a difference in my electric bill but I'm always worrying about whether I am wasting resources.... old hippie thing, I guess. I admit I did turn it on the last three nights of Fiesta --- not so much for the cool air as to be able to shut the windows and provide myself with white noise... Using the A/C unit on fan only isn't a bad idea either.

Actually, don't much like A/C. Fans in windows are just fine. HAVE to run a dehumidifier in basement which sucks electricity big time. Like some humidity, so no prob. Only things that have no power of choice are perfect. Nature is, man isn't.

Don't feel guilty about running it on those days; it's not costing you much money, and it's not producing much carbon dioxide. Just watch out for applying the Houston solution to Gloucester weather.

The hubby goes to bed before me and when I get up there, the bedroom is freezing!!!!! He puts it the regular "cool" cycle and sets it at 66. So last night I set it at 65, put it on "power saver" and it only went on when the temp rose above 65. Loved it. 'LIFE IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES...YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GONNA GET'

My bedroom is freeeeeezing in the winter - red frozen nose - my electric blanket keeps me warm.
