Photo taken at dusk - looks like Explorer is practicing and will be living up to name soon!

Where, oh where is Ospie?
|
Haven't laid eyes on Ospie in many days - has he flown the coop now that chicklets are adolescents? Harriet is doing all fish catching and
feeding...leaving the gang alone in nest while she hunts succulent fish.
Only things that have no power of choice are perfect. Nature is, man isn't. |

Quoted from CN Audubon website - 2 new photos 7/1 - check it out!
Many people have noticed lots of wing flapping activity among the chicks, so we're waiting for next big step: short solo flights off the nest. The 4 Osprey chicks have gotten so big that often the female adult has to perch at the very edge of the nest to feed them Only things that have no power of choice are perfect. Nature is, man isn't. |

If you have a photo to post, click on "images" in the bar at the very top of the screen here, then you can upload to an album, copy from the album by right click and choosing copy, then paste it in the "add reply", not the "quick reply". |

This is amazing - did not take snapshot because cam foggy from rain.
Little Guy flapping wings furiously, Mama standing right over him/her as if to say..."Don't even think about it...you're at least 5 days behind Explorer!" Only things that have no power of choice are perfect. Nature is, man isn't. |

Has anybody seen any confirmation of a fledge? Yesterday on a couple of occasions, I checked in and was sure there were only 3 in the nest. However as I waited
a couple of minutes hoping to see a little flyer return, they moved around and I discovered they were all there all along! Sheesh. So am wondering if you
actually saw one fly, Mazzie, or whether you were fooled like I was into believing. LOL ???

Watch them often, but so far all I saw was one get its feet just off the nest. Didn't see em fly off YET.

Yup. The Center has no reports of a fledge yet either, so I'm going to assume it hasn't happened and watch REAL closely. Hey, people, keep you finger
on the snap button for a photo op! LOL

If they're still in the nest, even if they've taken a short flight, I believe they would not be considered to have fledged...

That's true. What would be the term for the maiden flight, LWN? Or is there one?

I just checked, and Muffy is right -- "fledge" simply means to develop flight feathers.
It is often used to mean "leave the nest permanently", but that is, apparently, a very loose (read: improper) usage. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |

Interesting... the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature uses this definition for
"fledge:"
young birds are said to have "fledged" when they have completely acquired their first true feathers and have left the nest. They may be referred to as "fledglings" from the time they leave the nest until they are completely independent of all parental care. And the Cadillac of ornithological information, The Cornell Lab or Ornithology, says "fledge" means this...
Hmmm... seems loose usage is all around us... To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.-Theodore Roosevelt, The Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918 |
