How much money would the schools save if it closed the health center and day care and put the money into the regular school courses.

Another way to look at that question, tyu12, is how parochial is it to look at the cost factor as it applies ONLY to the tax money applied to the school
system rather than the overall cost/benefit to the city?

An excellent question, tyu12. I'll bet it's enough money to open a closed fire station or two. |

Indeed. The 17+ pregnancies will end up costing the taxpayers somewhere in the neighborhood of $18,000,000.00 over the next eighteen years. Kirk, Mooonbats & Co.s' "clinic" is truly a "gift" that will keep on giving......... |

no city $ on clinic or daycare | ||

According to info given at a recent school committee meeting the day care (pathways) and the clinic (agh) are not funded by the city. The schools only
provide space.

Here's a novel idea!!!
How about Addison Gilbert concentrate on keeping its' own neck off the chopping block, "Pathways" butt the eff' out of the schools, and the schools concentrate on teaching their students reading, writing, and arithmetic?!? Revolutionary, isn't it?!? |

I haven't responded to most of the threads with regards to this pregnancy pact/situation whatever anyone wishes to call it. But I do have a little
experience with the health center. I never signed a consent form for my child to use the health center. I read the pamphlet and after calling the center with
questions regarding the "privacy issue", I decided it wasn't for my child. Funny thing happened when I was at work, and couldn't be reached,
my child was seen at the clinic after being seen by the school nurse. Since there was a question of strep throat, the nurse recommended the clinic. The
clinic then ran a culture, which by the way was negative, and then proceeded to call a prescription into a local pharmacy for antibiotics. Not only was my
child seen without consent, a prescription was ordered for a nonexistent condition. And to top it all off, I was never contacted. When I tried contacting the
center the following day, my calls were never returned.
The clinic has some things to fix and my perception is that maybe with the high volume of children utilizing it, things might be getting a bit askew. This pregnancy situation has and will continue to be a high priority. There is nothing to be gained by focusing on the past, but looking toward the future. Parents have a duty to be involved in their children's lives. |

Mother, I so agree, let's move on. We cannot fix what's already happened, just learn from the past and move forward.

Sensible? I don't believe I've ever been called that before. Maybe just too lazy to get my caboose off this chair and go to bed. |

concluded it was 90% (or some other likely probability) to be strep, so issued the prescription, rather than delay an extra day.

I was on the committee that incorporated the day care center into the High School back around 1994. Carolyn Kirk was not around. We did it because kids were
having kids and dropping out as a result. We figured we could keep more of them in school and also provide decent care for the babies while training students
in child care. The clinic was also proposed at that time but not implemented until later. Again we saw a need in that some students were not getting
appropriate medical care.
I do not think either initiative caused students to become pregnant. That generally occurs elsewhere. Damon |
