Surely you're aware that "up country" towns in Vt, and NH, also up-state NY. have already zoned against Big Box, walmart type stores coming to their towns, especially in their downtown areas, at key intersections. Others have allowed the ones already there to stay, but NOT to expand. The decisions have been expansive in definition. They don't mind people shopping in already built malls, but they hate the related traffic jams, some stretching many miles out into rural areas, and interstate links. They've made it extremely clear that they will never sacrifice the character of their beloved towns, n'hoods, to be ruined, as they have been south and east of parts of Burlington, Vt, and even parts of booming ski areas in N.H., like N Conway.

If you're going to try to pin obstructionism on liberals, try finding even a few up-country planning and zoning boards, which are not dominated by hard core Republican conservatives, of several generations. Heh-heh And try listening to the conservatives in the mid-west, who WON'T build it, precisely so that "they" WON'T come! " even though jobs are desperately needed. Foresta, Market Basket needs to create MINI Market Maskets, to better serve today's public, in locations which can handle the traffic, Market basket creates. They already have the marketing edge on pricing, making mega millions for their whole family.
Comparing the ameteur summer Farmer's Markets, on Harbor Loop, to any De Moula's operation, is like comparing apples and oranges, amateur and pro sports, volunteer and professional public safety. The traffic jam you describe, was caused in part, by those who've lobbied so hard for the Farmer's Market to continue operating on Harbor Loop. It CAN AND SHOULD operate elsewhere, within walking distance of dwontown residents, but at at different hours, not competing for parking, and store closing times. Traffic jams in the downtown locations you describe CAN be avoided, should be avoided, as several groups are trying to do, by scheduling events and locations in more timely ways, such as avoiding the exodus when businesses close for the day, pouring traffic onto Roger's and Main St., others simultaneously. Traffic jams are BAD for all businesses, near where they occur. Also BAD for public safety. The hours between 4 and 6 pm, locally, are dominated by those going home from work. The general public can help by avoiding those increases in traffic, by using alternate times, routes.
