They were all standing and I couldn't see a deformity on any of them, but it can't be squatter who went for a fly, could it?

All I know is that Squat has big problems with left and right talons. Originally, I, too, thought just the left talon. Things definitely not looking up... They're all as big as she is! I'm kind of wondering if Squatter is always the one laying down, but the last few times I saw that one get up, it wasn't his feet. You're right, Realist, it's not looking good at all for Squatter. I wonder if Harriet will stop feeding him/her. ?

Since the weekend I've gotten e-mails from many Osprey Cam viewers (including a Nova Scotia resident) who are worried because they can't see all 4 chicks in the nest. But all 4 are fine: they are starting to explore beyond the nest's confines, sometimes sitting on top of the Osprey Cam Itself (you may see a chick's or adult's shadow) and in some cases taking very short flights (mostly straight up and down) off the nest. Photo below of all 4 chicks was taken yesterday. Today our Coastal Center staff confirms -- looking out their picture window at the nest and through spotting scopes -- that all 4 chicks are fine. Are they saying Squatter is OK? One would think so... Only things that have no power of choice are perfect. Nature is, man isn't.

Osprey Cam goes up and down periodically and needs to be re-booted periodically, and our staff at Milford Point is also very small and Center is not manned 24/7 so on weekends or at night if Osprey Cam goes down it can take a day or 2 before someone gets to it. I think the bottom line is let's give the chick more time to grow, and wait and see . . . Answer #1: Our staff has spoken to our colleagues (wildlife biologists and raptor experts) at the CT Department of Environmental Protection. IF there is a deformity - and we cannot confirm that at this point -- the Osprey chick is already fledged and would elude capture. If there is a deformity and it hinders the ability of the chick to hunt, then we have several options to consider. Answer # 2: We have an Osprey "pro" who observes our Osprey nest and the birds for 3 straight hours every Thursday, looking through a spotting scope and a TV monitor located at our Coastal Center at Milford Point. She doesn't think the chick has a deformity; she thinks that it is just gripping the nesting material for a foothold. Another thing to consider: what people see on our Osprey Cam versus what they see on our Cam's TV monitor or via a spotting scope can appear different. The Cam has a tendency to distort perspective; notice at the left and right sides of the Cam the "rounding" effect and the strange movement of the water in the background. We are all on alert, however. Hope you have a great weekend. I'm on vacation starting tomorrow until Aug. 11 but my assistant for the summer will be monitoring my e-mails periodically.
