So motorboats seem to be the ones with visual impairment. All that power can blind you to obvious hazards.

Was it parking next to Tenacity? Isnt the Tenacity run by Tim Silva of Lanesville? How do they put two mega yachts on those floats. Tight squeeze. No view for
the turistas.....

Impairment can mean many things. I didn't see any mention of conditions at the moment of impact. Maybe the Reasons crew could barely see over the bridge,
who knows. Can't wait to see the results of the investigation.

Larger vessels in controlled channels I believe have the right of way over sail driven vessels. You cannot force a tanker while under sail to heave to to your
right of way in a channel. Try and you will loose the fight for the right. Or become bow thruster luggage.

A 62' vessel has some serious radar. Must not have been on the crew's radar. I smell negligence.

Running on auto pilot without a properly trained operator happens way too often! From fast ferries to "Clorox bottle mini yachts". I can't count
the times I was almost run down over the years. Below this Boston Harbor Ferry was heading towards me while I was drift fishing outside the harbor. He plowed
thru countless lobster buoys as I started my engine to get out of his way. By the way....the pic is how close it is,no zoom!

It's dangerous out there. Many of the bigger boats use auto pilot when they are about a mile out of the harbor. I remember fishing a mile or so off of
Magnolia point and that is huge channel for boats heading toward salem and boston. We were in a 16 foot whaler type jigging for cod..and some of the boats were
coming at us dead on at full speed....it was uh...very nerve wracking to say the least. They would get up close ...way too close....and then veer off of us
...still at full throttle. My husband, being the cool head that he is
would start hollering and giving the 1 finger salute. One boat even turned around to give it back to my husband...well..yeah..that went over big. My hub always
says "they have the whole ocean, why do they have to climb on top of me??" I finally told him " i dont care if the biggest cod in the world are
out here, take me in ". Be careful out there ya landlubbers!!

I doubt if between the Elizabeth Islands and South Dartmouth would be considered a restricted channel for anything but a large tanker
though. If it were up toward the canal entrance, that would be another matter. The whole thing sounds like a misapplication of the autopilot to me but we will not know until the results of the investigation are published. Damon |

Here is the "Reason",I took this last month and wondered what it's background is. Built in 1993 and 62.5' long. Low profile, not the best
visability in certain situations.

I should have stayed in the auto repair business... A 62' Sea Ray must go for 750k and burn 70 gallons per hr..
I feel bad for the guy, but how do you miss a 30' sailboat with the sail up? |

Such a gorgeous boat. And they practically live on it all summer. Hope it was just a terrible tragedy.

Inattention Eyed As Factor in Boat Crash
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inattention eyed as factor in boat crash THE STANDARD-TIMES by Curt Brown July 22, 2008 DARTMOUTH - Investigators have ruled out alcohol as a cause of the fatal collision Friday between two boats on Buzzards Bay, but officials have investigated whether anyone was at the helm of the power boat that struck a Padanaram-based sailboat. "Alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor in the accident," Sgt. Rick Sylvia of the Massachusetts Environmental Police said yesterday. Sylvia also said that while investigators know the answer, they are not yet saying whether anyone was at the helm of the Reasons, a 63-foot, Gloucester-based power boat, when it hit the Priority, a 35-foot sailboat. Experienced sailors familiar with the accident and the bay have speculated that either the Reasons was on auto pilot or someone was not paying attention when the accident happened. Asked whether the power boat was on auto pilot, Sylvia said he "can't say at this time." He said the investigative agencies involved will meet today and there may be a statement after that meeting. The accident, which happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday about 2½ miles southeast of Mishaum Point in Dartmouth, resulted in the death of David J. "D.J." Walsh, 64, of Dartmouth, past chairman of the Buzzards Bay Regatta, and the retired president of Teledyne Rodney Metals, a specialty metals manufacturer. Warren G. Hathaway, 66, of Dartmouth, publisher emeritus of Hathaway Newspapers, part of the SouthCoast Media Group, was injured but managed to escape the damaged sailboat. Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter, said yesterday three people were aboard the Reasons - Fred Bevins III, 64, and Ellen Bevins, both of Gloucester, and a juvenile - at the time of the accident. Bevins, who lists an address of 22 Honeysuckle Road, Gloucester, is the owner of the Reasons, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Web site. He has not returned numerous calls from The Standard-Times to both his business and his home. Miliote said the district attorney's office has jurisdiction over the case because the incident resulted in an unattended death in Bristol County. "I don't have a specific cause of death to release at this time," he said. Sylvia said the investigation is still in its infancy and investigators are inspecting both vessels and gathering evidence from the accident. He added that investigators have spoken toFred and Ellen Bevins. Although there were other boats in the area, Sylvia said there were no witnesses to the collision. According to the Coast Guard, seas at the time were less than 1 foot and winds were 5 to 10 knots, with visibility of 2 to 3 miles. |
